    Advice please in Alice Springs...

Traveling through Alice springs and today my car started making an odd noise when I turn it off.. The car is still running fine but about a second after I turn it off it makes a noise 'wokka wokka wokka'.. A bit like a dying duck lol It's a public holiday here tomorrow so can't get it to a mechanic and am unsure if I should continue into halls creek tomorrow... Any one have any ideas..

    hey sue.

I'm in Alice too atm, just arrived today off the Tanami.
    maybe I'll see you around

could be the egr valve? don't own a puma but i know they do some funny valve cleaning thing on shutdown.

    Hope you get it sorted

Might just be the EGR,my son's makes a strange noise when it shuts down as well.

Others will chime in,hope the rest of your trip is OK!

    G'day Sue,

Is it a very faint sound and it goes something like chucka, chucka, chucka, chucka, chucka (that's the best way I have read that describes the sound) Just 5 times like that, no more, no less, if so it is the EGR doing its cleaning cycle and is normal. I can only hear mine if the radio is off and its pretty quiet. I generally listen for it out of habit now so I know that its actually working

    Sue,
The puma cycles the egr when the motor is shut down, when they get old/sticky/dirty/just plain bung they make a noise that may be what you describe.
As for if you should keep driving, I don't know.

It's not a quiet noise (it's loud enough to turn heads) and it makes the noise three times (every time) but if its the EGR then it's not a show stopper by the sound of it..

Mine is definitely quiet, but I have read other threads that say when they are on there way out they start to squeal, it may be on its way. It is a warranty item phew.

sue, yes certainly sounds like egr valve, they can be quietened down by removing it, dismantlng and cleaning/ lubricating the mechanism inside. the factory grease soon goes hard and fails to do its job, causing the bronze bushings to make that noise. a dob of LMM grease or similar will shut it up. if you leave them too long and they seize altogether, reduced power and high fuel consumption/ limp mode may occur. i would get suttons to check it out before you go too far 'bush'.
