Thread: 110 steering box

hi all quick question hope someone can help had the 300 tdi defender in to get a new pittman arm put on which I supplied they could not remove the old one as they did not have the correct puller bear in mind this a steering and suspension shop heard some banging they were trying to remove the old one by hitting it I put a stop to that then they decieded to pull the pittman arm joint to bits to re tension it I asked why they didn't just put the new parts from the new arm in to the one on the vehicle was told this was not necessary anyway, typical cairns workmanship should I be concerned about the belting of the steering arm and is there anything I need to check

the steering shaft is supported by a long plain bush

Not my 300tdi. Needle rollers.http://www.defenderhelp.com/36-steeringbox.html Good pic here.

I would have some concern, the problem is the needle rollers could have taken the brunt of how hard it was hit.
It is possible to destroy the needle rollers in the box and/or brinnell the sector shaft by doing this.
If the shaft was supported correctly.. it may not have been damaged.
Question is how hard and with what support was the hitting done.
