    Red face safari snorkel, easy to fit?

    hi guys,

    The time has come to fit a snorkel, but price for fitting it is almost as much as the snorkel itself.

    I barely know the difference between a flat and phillips screwdriver; do you recon I could fit it myself or is there much more to it, do I need any special tools?

    (In case depends on model, I have a 2.2l defender)

    Simply job,

    But do you self a favour and get in touch with Nugget (on this site) and buy his kit to replace all of the factory ducting and connection to the mud guard.

    Fitting the snorkel is easy, you should have a templet to show where to drill the holes in the guard. You will need a step drill bit. Not expensive from local hard ware store.

    Just take your time, think about each step and enjoy your time working on the D'fer.

    Just to confirm, does the safari snorkel for the 2.4 fit the 2.2 air vent on the side and pillar etc. thanks

    The right hand outside of the Defender air intake has not changed since the first 300Tdi's in 1994, so the Safari snorkel will fit the car.

    The ducting on the inside has had a few changes and the only difference there "might" be is an internal adapter between the standard outlet on the bottom of the snorkel and the Puma's plumbing. Nugget's duct would negate that in any case if you plan to use the RAI (Raised Air Intake) as a snorkel. (Puma OME plumbing is NOT waterproof!!!).

    Mantec RAI's (snorkels) list everything from 300Tdi compatible with the same kit, so its most probably marketing (higher price) to sell a 2.4 or 2.2 snorkel as being different.

    Quote: "The raised air intake fits to the vehicle using the existing vent on the right hand side. To fit vehicles with 300tdi, TD5 and 2.4 and 2.2 transit puma engines. Not compatible with an external roll cage."

    Ok so I took a week to buildup the courage to do this, and let me say this, I will happily pay someone to do it!

    Fitting the snorkel, easypeazy, but if you want it for deep river crossings, then yes you definitely have to get "nugget gear" because there is no way you can make the air duct water tight.

    Getting the nugget gear into a 2012 defender.......... I don't have nice tools like air saw etc etc, so i had to cut the OEM air duct with a hacksaw no less than 5 times to try get it out, which might not sound bad and it does cut very easily, but doing it in a tight space without cutting through wires or other pipes, well...
    Getting the fat bit (big peace mounted to the fender) out took me a VERY long time. Why, because i didn't want to take the wheel off, and proceed to dismantle the fender just to get the inner guard off to get more space.
    Finally! I got the crap out, ready to put the nugget gear in; sweat, but let me tell you about sikaflex... Well the same tight space meant that i had to dry-fit everything and then try to get sealer in there. From this day forth I'll be know as blacky

    It took me the whole afternoon (about 5 hours) but the nugget gear is in! Then i proceeded to mount the snorkel only to beak 2 screws off in the pillar so i came inside and poured a large wiskey!

    Sorry to hear you had a few problems.

    The 10 minutes spent taking off the front wheel and the inner guard is really worth the time and effort...

    LOL, maybe takes you 10 mins nugget, you have all the tools AND know how to use them (Thanks again for the gear!)

    But there's obviously a difference in the models because I'd have to remove the whole outer guard / flare,
    drill out 6 rivets on the inner guard and undo a handful of bolts, one of which I don't think I would have been able to put back without taking the engine out?

    (I probably did it the hard way, but luckily I know my own limits else this new Defer might have become a 5 year rebuild project )

    Sorry...bad terminology...you actually only need to take off the strip which includes the flare. Is only about 8 or so plastic Xmas trees where you push out the centre pin....and the front wheel of course.
