I dont think so. And be careful as I think it has seals on each end for the vacuum in the cylinder. you may be better off sourcing another nut to run on the thread you have there (plenty of it)
Hi folks
Trying to get the in-cab light working for the MD, so down the back end checking the electrical connections on the actuator. The black earth wire is attached to one of the Allen bolts which I removed, cleaned and replaced.
The red wire you can see from the pic is a female bullet connector pushed on to the end of the bolt thread seen above the earth lead.
Pulled off the connector with a view to replacing it with a circular one to sit beneath the nut on the threaded bolt. However as I try to remove the nut, the bolt spins.
Is this meant to be removable or is something amiss inside the housing?
TIA
Cheers
Mike

G'day Mike, The red wire is "live" and the circuit is closed when the locking fork contacts the end of that threaded bolt and then the light comes on. Be very careful about overtightening or shorting it out if you are going to change it as the threaded bolt has insulators on it on both sides of the housing. Why change it? I have been using mine like that for over 20 years with no problems.

Hi Brian
So yours also has female bullet connector pushed onto the thread as original? If that's the case, I'm happy to leave it, I just thought someone had bodged it. Perhaps I'm not getting a light as the thread needs to be a little further in to make a connection?
Cheers

Hmmm, no power at the red wire with the ignition on...![]()

Exactly the same Mike, it shouldn't give any problems. If your light is not working firstly check if there is power at the female connection with ignition on. A multimeter is the go here. If power is there, check the earth connection at the light and continuity in both wires and the bulb itself. If no power, check the wire continuity and fuse and the power source connection. If everything is fine and still no light it may be that the fork is not touching the end of that threaded bolt when engaged. You can check it for continuity with the multimeter and the unit locked. If no continuity you will have to remove the vacuum cylinder from the axle housing and have a look inside it when it is locked to see if the fork contacts it. From memory I think you can adjust the threaded bolt but be careful with the insulators.

Mike, mine is set up the same as yours.
Well had to give up enjoyable pursuits and get on with things like mowing and whipper-snipping
But before that I managed to follow the red wire into a conduit running up the chassis before disappearing up over the gearbox. Along the way I discovered the vacuum reservoir - like a bit of exhaust pipe - as described by IsuzuRover. Only one line connected to it that I could see...
So will lift the carpet in the cab and see if there's a connection in there somewhere. Stay tuned...
Cheers

I've not seen one for, well, many years. Can the maxidrive locker be switched with a carling switch the same as an ARB etc or does it have to use some sort of special switch ?
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

Hi Vlad
It is an air switch, in fact a change over air switch. You could use a Carling switch, but you would have to find an electric/air solenoid to replicate the function of the switch.
While we're back on the subject. If someone has a front maxidrive dissassembled, would they mind measuring the length of the dog clutch slider and the length and other dimensions of the actuator fork.
