    R380 gearbox cooler

I bought my TD5 over from the UK and noticed the gearbox temp seemed high when towing a camper, after some research it looks like the Euro Deefers weren't fitted with a cooler at all and the ports on the gearbox have been blanked off. Rest of world have a pipe that loops forward via a thermo valve on the gearbox.
Ashcroft do a complete kit for Approx £245 but the valve block isn't a thermo type so the oil would be constantly circulating through the cooler, is this a good or bad thing and would it be better to source a thermo block and make up my own cooler? Just put in Redline MT90 and the gear change is so much better once the box has reached 30deg+ (approx 10mins driving)

    Hey there,
My 110 is also from the UK and I've noticed the same. Never had any problems mind you, even when crossing several of the deserts and long fast (130 in the Territory) highway driving.

I'll be watching this with interest.

One immediate thought though is that if Dave has released a cooler without the thermostat in the pipe work then it won't need one - as we all know Dave doesn't do things by halves.

My issue with the Ashcroft cooler has always been how and where to mount it!?!?! My 110 has an uprated (bigger) inter-cooler and also the air-con condenser in front of the rad.

Well I was struggling to think of where to mount a cooler and I had a thought could it be mounted under the vent on the right hand wing, would the gearbox pump be strong enough to circulate the oil up there? Mines got these and thought it would create sufficient air flow though the cooler

You will be able to get the thermostat block off another gearbox. Try a wrecker, there is bound to be one with a dead gearbox. I got a new one directly from LR when they were selling of their stock holdings a while ago. I have yet to fit it and have only recently started gathering the bits to do the job again.
