    Bad oil leak

    Hi
    Well I guess the tyre/tube issues are the least of my worries now as my 96 130 seems to have developed a bad oil leak.

    Its coming from the hole in the bottom of the cam belt cover it is right at the bottom just behind the crank pulley, a threaded hole looks like a drain for the timing cover?

    I have booked the car into PCB land rovers but am rather concerned.

    I have recently had the cam belt changed, by them, which was an expensive experience ($1400) due to the crank bolt being Loctited in and the Harmonic balancer having to be chiselled off.

    All relevant seals were replaced at the time.

    So anyone got an idea what might be wrong and whether this is going to be another painful experience?

    I'm not in anyway pointing the finger at PCB they have been great!

    Crank oil seal, or cam oil seal. I believe crank oil seal is the most common. They will have to remove everything they did for the timing belt, including the timing belt itself to change the seal. (Assuming it's the seal).

    Camshaft oil seal ? It was with my 300Tdi.
    After finding the offending seal a new belt may also be required. If the belt has been in contact with the oil the belts expected service life may also be suspect.

    Its also possible that a dropped thrust washer has allowed the crankshaft enough movement to push the seal causing the leak, if you still have the car i would try and lever the harmonic ballancer forward to check for excessive end float

    Thanks for the replies I'll try moving the balancer, sounds like the cam shaft seal could be a possibility as well, the crank seal is new ,I know that is no guarantee.

    Trying not to use the car at moment, I guess the engines getting a good oil flush!

    Thought I would a add a follow up to the original post as I hate it when a post never gives a conclusion.

    Turns out the oil seal had turned inside out due to a sharp edge on the crankshaft from the harmonic balancer having to be chiselled off.

    PCB landrovers were fantastic, they cleaned up the shaft, relaced the seal and belt, with no charge to me, even though I tried to at least pay for parts.

    So a good outcome and the car is now leak free, well from that area anyway!
