    "How old is your landy?"

Today the doorbell rang and I had a salesman for some electricity company. He broke the ice with a comment about the nice landy. Then asked how old? Matter of factly I said 12 months.
Oh yeah, he said, but when was it built? Umm 2012.
What! They still build them like that!
Yep for the last 65 years anyway

He was dumbfounded and then I had to inform him I am moving interstate in a week and a bit and I wasn't interested.

Two days after picking up the defender I was parked and an old guy come up to me and said nice Landy restoration. Felt bad to say it was 2 days old.

Does anyone else silently chuckle when people think they were just passed by an 'old' landy?

I've had a few of those moments
Looking a bit on the dirty side one day, a truck driver and I have the following convo

Him - "Well looked after mate,, how old exactly?"
Me - "about six months" (Feeling extremely proud,, as you do when someone admires your ride )
    Him - "BS"
    Me - "Check the sticker"
    Him - "Crap,, cant be"
Me - "Its even got electric windows"
    Him - "Drive it much?"
Me - "Just did the Border Tk, and we've got some big long term travels planned"

    He went away rather confused.

I've actually had this conversation quite a few times with a few different blokes. Now I've had it longer, I get to say more places . There's a lot of people out there don't seem to realise their still made.

On arriving back in the UK in ours from Cape Town we went to my wife's sisters house as one of our first ports of call, the came out to se the wonderers return and admire our trusty defender.

My brother in law came out with "how old is it? It's a bit dirty!"

It had just driven 35,000kms through Africa 3 years on it is still dirty, last week I retrieved a piece of Ethiopian obsidian out of one of the chassis outriggers and that's after AQIS had been all over her 2 years ago!

Not really age related but similar.

I had a friend, used to seeing me in my traditional DBG Series 2a, see my D90 in metallic silver and the conversation went like this:
Him: "Where did you get the paint done? They've done a nice job"
Me: Of course I replied "Sollihul".
Him: "Where are they? I've never heard of them."
Me: "It's the place. The Land Rover factory in Sollihul, UK."
Him: "Oh." Shakes his head and walk away muttering to himself.

I've also had the "nice restoration" comments a few times and the incredulous looks when you say it's a 2012 with <30,000 km's on it.

And that's what's so great about our cars.
    Who cares!

When the new one comes out, I don't think we'll have that issue.

    Vice versa

    Hello from Brisbane.

    Probably get the reverse response.

When my Series 3 88" was parked/stranded in the street I was often asked by passers by "how old" or "didn't think they still made them". When you said it was 38 years old with an even older motor you would often detect the familar "gotta be BS" look as they wandered off.

    Cheers,

A couple of days after I bought my 90 the bloke across the road came over and said "Nice landrover, it's been restored really well!" When I told him that I picked it up brand new from the dealers a couple of days earlier he couldn't believe it! I wonder if new VW beetle owners get the same thing? Or new mini owners?

    Smile all sounds familiar

We got the same comment from our neighbour as we climbed out of the 90,having just picked it up new in Tamworth and added 700ks to the dial, crossed a few creeks and scratched a bit of paint on the way home to sydney,( thanks btw to those who suggested some dirt to drive on the way,was a great scenic trip home ) .Makes ya smile.

    "How old is your landy?"

The average Joe is so used to seeing every new model from Japan and Asia being in most cases totally diffrent to the previous models they take it for granted.

Its all about design heritage / linage .....somthing that Jap / asian manufacturers don't quite grasp or understand compared to their European counterparts.

With all quality marques early examples of Merc's, BMW's and Landrovers you can see the progression in style and design to the current model and the 90, 110, 130 Defender / county is an excellent example of beauty, form and function.

    Cheers

    Baggy
