I always use the strap type oil filter wrench and I have never removed the heat shield. I was starting to think I had been missing something.
Something else that I found help immensely is heat wrap. You can get a roll from eBay for next to nothing ($5 or something). Then just use hose claps to hold the ends from unraveling. It's not nice to fit because it's glass fibre, like insule wool (pink bats that are actually yellow) that you put in your house for insulation. Once it's there, no more burning when you undo the oil filter on a hot motor. You can touch the outside of the heat wrap with out burning your hand even if the motor has been running at temp.
