    Td5 Service

    Hello all
I remember reading on here about a year ago that some people dont put the heat shield back on after a service. I did my first service on the w/e and spent a good 2-3 hours trying to get that 3rd bolt on the heat shield back on (the one with the bigger bolt). I eventually got it back on but is everyone else just leaving it off......or even bothering putting the whole heat shield back on?

Oh and depending on where you look (Rave CD, Parts box & online recomendations) how tight is everyone putting the spin on filter back ie 1/2 or 3/4 turn?....I couldnt get mine on much past a half a turn with the strap wrench i was using.......again was just wondering

    Regards

    Leave it off

I left mine off it was slightly more noisy but I'm deaf anyway. It's much easier to keep the engine clean with it off. I think I sold mine with the cover off as well.

Yes mate leave it off. I have also taken the turbo heat shield off too. But, after towing the van out to Dubbo with a westerly 34 deg C headwind, the oil pressure switch wiring conduit went a bit soft......

I leave mine on too, the spin on oil filter doesn't really need to be tight, I've always done mine 1/4 past hand tight.

I can't believe how many people struggle to remove or replace the 3rd bolt. I have never had a problem. Some have been tight bit they really aren't that hard.

What heat shield are you talking about?

I don't remove any heat shield when I do a service.

Do you mean the acoustic engine cover. It has 4 bolts.

    Happy Days.

The one above the turbo .....I left the other bolts loose assuming it would make it easier to get the 3rd bolt in but 2 hours later i tried it with the other 2 bolts in tight and it was easier to do the 3rd........i only asumed other people had trouble with it .......which i guess is confirmed. It was the first time i'd done the service so who knows ....maybe it will be easier next time. Thanks all

Rave CD recommended taking it off to get at the spin on filter........originally was trying to remove the spin on filter with one of those metal filter wrenches.....wasn't enough clearance in the end even after removing the h/sheild. I finally got it off with one of those stap (webbing) wrenches.......Next time i might try to remove the spin on without removing the H/S.......should be easier if i replace it more often.

And yes....i wasn't talking about that accoustic cover......i could of left that on or off....thats a no brainer ....its similar to the one on the freelander.
