Replacing R380 Gearbox - what else should i replace?

I'm currently pulling the R380 box out of mt '01 Defender. The symptoms suggest the typical 5th gear rear support bearings have failed, but in addition to the noise in 1st,2nd,3rd and 5th, the gears are now hard to select so i'll mosty likely upgrade to the Ashcroft box with HD support bearings (i run a tuned Td5 on big tyres so will be worthwhile).

Anyway, while i'm in there, i'm going to do the lot, i don't want to pull the box out again in 6 months to do the clutch or whatever.

So far, in adidtion the gearbox, i'll replace the following:

    • Dual mass flywheel
    • Clutch/pressure plate/throw out bearing
    • Spigot bush ***will remember to soak in oil***
    • Rear main seal
    • Transfer case input gear (if not already cross-drilled)
    • Gearbox mounts
    • Engine mounts

Is there anything else i should replace while i'm in there??

    Thanks!

Your gear should be cross drilled.

A couple of others while you are there:

Half shaft seals in the transfer box plus input and output shaft seals

New solenoid kit in the starter motor (it has to come out anyhow)

Replace the small hose out of the oil cooler (It is easier removing the R380 with the pipe connected to this out of the way.

Good points Erich!, yes i'll add those to the list. I already did the starter solenoid a year or two ago, a lot cheaper than replacing the whole starter

I think that pretty much covers it with everything Erich has added.

If you have the transfer out you could possibly look at doing the centre diff shims aswell.

You can sell me the old broken gearbox if you don't need it!?

If you are changing the engine mounts mite be a good chance to bo sump seals and check oil pick up and see if it's not loose.

Possibly! I'll see how much it costs to send back to Ashcroft on the slow boat, the core refund is around $660 so if i can ship it for $200 or so it might be worth it but that might be a bit optimistic, i'll let you know.

Yes, if you can call it that (about a metres worth of pipe), but i suppose it does help.

Not a bad idea... the ol' oil pump bolt walk about trick has always been in the back of my mind.

Ashcroft ATB centre diff will be better than shims and a one piece cross shaft!
