    puma transfer case

    Hi guys.
I have a 2008 puma defender and I need to know what model transfer case it has. It is starting to make so horrible growling and whining sounds. I have changed the oil recently and it did have a few tiny bits of metal on the sump plug. I fear I may have to pull it down to change some bearings and s6ch so need to order the right parts. Bit of a worry since it hasn't quite done 120k yet.
    Many thanks.

its an lt230 turned downwards and tilted.

IMHO partial cause of the problem is the UJ's running out of parallel on the shafts.

All comes down to how well the diffs were set up in the first place. And yes, UJ phasing should be checked because obviously the driveshaft has been disconnected to fit the lockers.

RRC, Disco 1 and all coil sprung LRs have had the front propshaft out of phase since day dot. I can not see this being the cause. The LT230 has been in service for many years with great reputation. It is only in recent years there has been problems. This seems to be more related to QC and quality of internals than anything else.

Note: not everything in this article is correct, but it gives you a basic idea of the principles.
