130 2.4L unusual sound in 5th gear
My '98 130 defender has developed a strange intermittant scraping noise when travelling in fifth gear when under acceleration. If I drop back to 4th it dissappears. Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers Norm

Does yours have the R380 gearbox?
If so, I would be leaning toward layshaft bearings (rear?) on their way out. Somebody more knowledgeable should come along shortly to confirm this.
Our layshaft sheared on the thin part, but with no warning, and the bearings were fine - though I think it's more common for the bearings to go first.
If it is that, I believe soonest attention is required, lest the bearing fail completely. Teeth can be removed from gears, and oil pumps destroyed.
