My 90 300tdi has a nosy thrust washer.
More rattling sound when the clutch pedal is not pressed down and the car is in neutral on tick over. Pressing the pedal again with normally get rid of the noise.
Been like this for 6 years. :-)
Hi brains trust
My defender 300tdi 110 has a noisy (presumably) thust bearing. But..it onlymakes noise when pedal is out ie it goes quite when clutch pedal depressed. Itmake a kind of whirring noise which if I press the pedal down and then releaseeither goes away or changes pitch or quietens down.
Now I removed the clutch slave cylinder and squirted some lanolin in thegeneral direction of the thrust bearing, refitted the slave.....and the noise disappearedand the clutch pedal became lighter under foot! About a week has passed now andthe noise has started to become audible once again.
What the dickens is going on? And moreimportantly is something about to let go? I am off to the Simpson Desert at the end of June so need reliability but.........will get clubbed with the frying pan if I say I need 1K for a new clutch.
Any thoughts?
Cheers Ben

It will cost you more than a K for a tow out there, maybe a lot more.
It will also cost more than a K to pay some one to R+R the gear box and fit a new clutch kit so, toss a coin, and carry spare water and food , she'll be right.
How would you feel if something went wrong out there knowing you had a potential problem before you left.
Yeah, I'd be getting it checked out - remember last year some time two young guys around 25 years old died in the desert cos they were under prepared and their car broke down.
It's gonna need doing sooner or later and better fixing it sooner if you're heading bush for a while
