    2.4L PUMA - 250,000kms.....

    Hi All
    07 2.4 130 with 250,000kms.

Is this too many to be reliable ..... is this a gearbox waiting to explode type situation? It is a country vehicle. Had a new clutch at 230,000kms.

Is this a risky buy? I am looking to setup for remote area touring with a slide on camper.

    Thanks,
    Mike

I guess the K's are getting up there, but it's good to hear of PUMA's with big K's.

I don't think there will be issues with the motor, but the box ..... Maybe.

A friends Transit did 5th gear at 350,000 but is a roofers truck and is made work hard every day.

How many $$$$$ would be the thing.....you could always pre- empt the gear box issues and recondition before it goes Boom !

It is always hard to know as there are not that many around with big KM on them so who knows how long they are going to last but hopefully a while....

You never know when things are going to happen, my head gasket went with only 94,000km on it but that is no indication that one with 250,000km will have any issues with the head gasket at all.

I guess if the price is right then get it checked out by a mechanic and if it checks out then you should hopefully be ok.

Thanks for the replies. It is priced around $22,000.
I will ask for a report on what was done under LR Warranty. There were a lot of little things with the first run of PUMAs. It is a one-owner.

If it's a country vehicle why did it need a clutch at 230K km?

230k, how long should one last??

Owner might have rode the clutch a lot, rested foot on clutch pedal, a lot of off road work.....plus I have read plenty of clutch failures on here with pumas......

I would take it to a LR specialist mechanic and pay for an inspection with a full report…. provided you are seriously considering purchasing the vehicle and are pretty much set on this one.

If you have any other doubts then I would pass it up, but if this is your only concern and you're sure it's the vehicle for you if it proves to be sound, then surely it's worth the moola to have it properly checked.

    Cheers,

My mate has hat clutches in his 2 PUMAs go under 40,000kms. So l think if it has managed 230,000kms on one clutch them that sits well with me.

    Thanks for advice........

My first defender had high mileage. It was a TD5. My thoughts on the puma engine. There are transit vans running around with taxi odo figures. The transfer case will be fine provided it was serviced. I agree that the gearbox may be questionable but negotiate on price for that risk.

To my point, I found on a high mileage truck it was the little things that needed constant attention. Bearings, bushes, shocks, coils, radiator hoses, intercooler hoses etc etc. They systematically were failing on a regular basis so for a while it was constantly with the mechanic. You should budget for an overhaul of the items that would have worn over 250k. Do it off the bat as a post purchase overhaul or as they wear out.

As for 230k for a clutch, I'd be happy with that mileage in a 4wd. It's a consumable part.

My puma didn't wear the clutch out, but spat a spring out at 240,000 km. It still seems to be reliable at 250 now, and am happy to do extended trips, so could be lucky. The gear box oil was still relatively clean, with no sign of wear debris, or synchro brass in it, so nothing is wearing abnormally. Can't rule out sudden catastrophic failure happening though.
