    Smile 2.4 Puma oils

    I have had a REALLY good search in the forums ( The good oils ) and still am quite confused on which oils are best.
    I brought my 2008 110 ( Milly ) second hand with 100,000km on the clock and wanted to change all the oils, due to the last service including Gearbox, Diffs and Transfer Case ) was done by the owner at home and just wanted to be safe than sorry.
    I have also been on websites and also of them say 'refer to dealer'
    So i thought i would list what i have found and get everyone's opinion.
    Mainly about Liqui Moly. I can get these oils locally and have heard they are good.

    Engine -
    Penrite Enviro +C4
    Liqui Moly Top Tec 4500

    Diffs -
    Penrite Gear Oil 80w-90
    Liqui Moly Hypoid-Getriebeol (GL5) 85w-90

    Gearbox -
    Penrite Pro-Gear 75w-90

    Transfer Case -
    Penrite Pro Gear 75w-90
    Liqui Moly Hochleistungs-Getriebeol ( GL4+) 75w-90\

    Also have looked into Castrol, but they too say refer to dealer for quite a few.

    I don't know a great deal in regards to the Liquid Moly range, I'm sure someone here will be able to help. But just be careful in regards to the oil you use for your gearbox, it need's to be yellow metal safe, GL4. Some GL4/5 fluids are buffered to prevent yellow metal discolouration, but please check. Landrover specify BOT130M, only available from dealers and it's hard to get.
    I use Motul Gear 300 75w-90 fully synthetic, for the gearbox, it's GL4/5, but yellow metal safe. Gearbox service fill is 2.2 ltrs, do not overfill.
    Transfer Case, Castrol Syntrax, fully synthetic 75w-90, service fill 2.3 ltrs. I used to put the Castrol in the gearbox as well, but changed to the Motul last service.
    Engine, I now use Total Quartz 9000 Future NFC 5W-30, meets Ford WSS-M2C-913-C specs, backwards compatible with WSS-M2C-913-B. When previous owner had it serviced by the dealer, looks like they used Castrol Edge Professional 5W-30 and earlier on Castrol Magnatec A1 5w-30
    Diffs, Castrol EPX 80W-90.

    These are just the oils I use, there are many more options, try Defender2.net, the UK forum, the boys and girls there are just as helpful as the guys on this forum.
    I service mine every 10,000k's, engine, air and fuel filter. Gearbox and Transfer Case every 20,000k's, I don't know how Landrover can say the gearbox should be done at 200,000k's, that's just madness. Diffs get done every 10,000k's.

    Mine is a 2010 Puma, when i bought it it had a full service history with just over 60,000k's on the clock. The gearbox oil was dark black and had lost most of it's viscosity, plus it was overfilled as I got 3.4 ltrs out of it, maybe I got one of those Friday afternoon assembled Defenders, as the initial fill from factory is 2.4ltrs.
    Enjoy servicing your Defender, the Puma is very easy to do, just check the quality of the oils you use, have fun.

    Which do you think is better Castrol or Motul
    Would rather have one oil to do both if possible.

    The Puma 2.4 needs Ford WSS-M2C-913-B or C

    which is HPR 5 5W-40 (Full Syn.

    Penrite Oil - A Better Class Of Oil

    Penrite Enviro +C4 has a recommendation of Ford M2C934-B (level)!!!!! which is for the 2.2 engine with a DPF. but do Australian models have DPFs. In New Zealand they are not fitted with the DPF

    I would use the Motul Gear 300 75W-90, the shifts are so much smoother especially when cold. Initially the Castrol Syntrax was all I could get hold of from my local supplier, so I used it in both transfer and gearbox. I still have some left over Syntrax, but when that's all gone I'll use the Motul in both box's like you suggested. The Motul is a little pricier, but hey you get what you pay for, and so far I'm very happy with the Motul. It's been in the gearbox for approx 8000k's.

    Sashadi,

    No the 2.2 Puma engine fitted to to the current model Defenders sold in Australia (and NZ apparently) does not have a DPF (Thankfully!).

    How about using HPR Diesel 5 it is also meets Ford WSS-M2C-913-B or C
