Thread: WING PROTECTORS ADVICE

I bought some black chequerplate wing tops but haven't fitted them yet, but....
1) wouldn't have thought so, the front wings are ally, so is the chequerplate and the screws are stainless steel. Possibly might get some galvanic corrosion where the ally meets stainless I suppose, but painting over the drilled holes should stop that.
2) No idea!
3) Not sure I'd be standing on my wingtops, I've already put a shallow dent in the top of one of them from leaning on it so the chequerplate is more to stop additional dents from either myself or cack-handed mechanics rather than to allow me to stand on the top!

I got some 3mm chequerplate on my TD5. On a Defender, it's pretty much guaranteed you will pick up a dent or more in your unrotected wing tops at every service. The wing-tops stop this completely. Because it's going to look less dented in a few years I'd think that your' resale value will increase. I never bothered with the bonnet protector, seemed a little pointless as if I needed a ladder I'd get one.

The wings are alloy, the cheuquerplate is alloy. The only area where you might have some issues is the gasket that goes between the two. Make sure this is reasonably well sealed to stop dirt and crap getting in under - not so much due to rust but because grit might damage the paint and cause the clear coat to separate around the edges. (Not really a big deal though.

I prefer the chquerplate with countersunk stainless set screws to mount - they look really quite nice.

I have chequerplate on the bonnet of my County, which already has more robust panels than a Defender, and the chequerplate allows me to stand on the bonnet with confidence. But I colour coded the chequerplate to the car because I don't like the look of the stuff.

They are Mammouth 3mm thick ones.
I got them along with a load of other stuff from Land Rover Spares, Range Rover Parts & Accessories | LR Parts in the UK.
I think they were 60 odd pounds.

I have them with the bonnet protector on my 2012 110. I bought them through Juddy so I think they are Mammoth, but not sure. I stand on my wing tops all the time, and I am 105kg. Just be careful and spread the weight evenly between the two. I stand on the bonnett one but take alot of weight off by resting on the roof at the same time. If you bounce on it you are sure to dent and crack the paint work. The bonnett one I have found is great for my two young girls, who love to sit on the bonnet at times and climb all over it and it's become a novelty to make other 3 & 5 yr olds jelous because their dads wont let them walk all over there 4wd. Beats walking all over the panel itself. It adds great protection and tough factor imo, people always ask me if they come standard or was it my idea to make them.
