    Synthetic winch rope through tight angle

    Hi

    I am just about to install a Runva 12000lbs winch to my 1996 130 but have come up against an interesting problem.

    The slot for the cable is inline with the top mounting bolts but with the cable coming off the bottom of the drum it has to turn through approximately 90 degrees to go out through the fairlead.

    I can't turn the winch upside down as the mounting holes and slot are off centre and so the winch will only fit one way.

    And Runva say I can not wind the rope on the other way round.

    As the front part of the Bullbar is approximately 10mm plate and rock hard, I don't fancy trying to cut another slot.

    So what are peoples thoughts on the rope traveling up from the bottom of the drum to the top and then turning through 90 degrees out through the fairlead? It will not foul anything on its way.

    Why can't you run it on backwards like you said then rewire forward and reverse? What did runva say?

    Ideally the winch line should run a straight line off the top (or bottom) of the drum and out the fairlead.

    Any angles created there will wear the line and decrease it's strength.

    Can you detach the drum and flip it or is this the same as running the rope on backwards with the brake?

    So the brake only works in one direction? Not good if winching down off something..... Ask for money back and get another winch. Always use winch with brake that works on both directions. Circumstances can change mid-winch!

    The winch is the EWX12000.

    I think a lot of winches are the same - not designed to winch out as much as in.

    They're designed to run with the brake, it disengages with rotation and when powered off it holds. In reverse, some like the runva run against the brake, which is why free spools were developed. "Back in my day" when a 8274 didn't have a freespool we used to have to power out the entire length of wire. Believe me 60m of 3/8 wire is heavy at the end dragging uphill.

    get someone with a plasma cutter to cut the slot in the right spot for you.
