Clicking noise in the instrument cluster

I have an early TD5 which has developed a clicking noise in the instrument cluster when doing around 75-80. It is not constant or consistent with road speed. Anyone have any idea what the cause and cure maybe? Been there for about ten months. Some days worse than others.

    Cheers Simon

Check the speedo cable in pushed right on to the speedo. Could be loose causing the clicking

    Ignorance!

I'm showing my ignorance right here, if it is cable drive the cable could be dry or slightly bent, or, as already mentioned not connected quite correctly.
This was an old problem with cable drive speedos, we used to remove the inner cable, usually just a disconnect from the speedo head and extract the inner, clean and lightly grease the inner and refit it. Take care not to get grease around the top 200mm of cable, you do not want it migrating up into the speedo head.
Any multi purpose grease will do.

    Cheers

I've never had a TD5, but I was under the impression that all TD5 defenders had electronic speedo transducers at the transfer case and wires to the speedo, not a mechanical cable?

    Thanks all

Yes Mike that's what my research suggests no cable otherwise I would have the thing pulled apart already. I know the noise a poorly connected or worn speedo cable makes (had minis back in the 70's) and this is different. Albeit similar.

Well finally found out what the noise is. There is no 'speedo' cable but electronic impulse are sent to the speedo head where there is a small electric motor which in turn drives the speedo. It is apparently this motor which is making the noise. But @$750 to replace the unit, it can wait a little longer.
