Any info on how a UHF with a top mounted speaker goes for sound quality once inserted into a roof console or enclosed din mount? I imagine an external speaker would be required. Can anyone confirm?

Else, a front mounted speaker UHF like the icom 400 seems the go.

    Cheers

I considered placing my UHF where the after market glove boxes go, but decided against it as it was too far to reach if I wanted to adjust it. Instead I bought one that is controlled from the mic, mounted it in the ex-box and put an external speaker in the front sloping surface of the ex-box.

I generally like the setup except for the volume control as I find the mic based volume buttons slower and more cumbersome to use than a volume knob.

I previously had a 1DIN UHF mounted in a roof console with an extension cable for the mic. The mic mount replaced the cigarette lighter socket. That was a good location for the mic as it avoided reaching overhead for it. The only reason I didn't repeat that setup in my current 110 was that I didn't want a console encroaching in the cabin space.

About a week ago I bought an fitted a UNIDEN UH8080NB, it's a remote unit with all the crap on the hand piece. The unit came with a mic extension so I cut a hole in one of the switch blank offs and mounted the plug in there and just just 3m taped the mic clip to the dash beside the heater controls. Picked up key power off the cigarette lighter.

The main unit is behind the dash, zip tied and 3M taped to the top of the stereo head unit.

Out of interest - what channel does everyone leave their radio on? Or are you constantly scanning.

Thanks for that, so I can assume no dramas with the main unit getting too hot in there. I see they have a heat sink on the back of them that was why I was asking as I thought because of that heat sink they must generate a bit of heat.

I leave mine on 19 as most truckers use this channel , you can give them a yell when your overtaking .
