    Strange Whining Noises

My 300tdi Defender has developed a "whiny" noise and a vibrating type rattle which appears to sound like it's around the gearbox end. It almost sounds like a radio interfering with engine noise When the bonnet is raised the noise sounds like it comes from the front of the engine
Engine is running fine, clutch and gearbox seem okay but I was wondering if it could be the clutch release bearing or something else rattling around. If you rev the engine the whine increases with the rpm, with the clutch depressed the whine is still evident, but if the vehicle is under load going up hill the rattle and whine doesn't seem so bad.

Any ideas before I cart it off to M R Automotive ??

Try it with the belts disconnected
