    cracked starter motor housing.

I am really annoyed that I just spent an hour getting my starter motor off my TD5 Defender. Needed to clean the contact area, and replace the contacts. This part only took 15 minutes.
On putting the starter motor back in place, a piece of the housing that holds the bottom bolt, just fell off. It is a clean break, and shows no sign of dirt, or wear. There was no stress that I know of put on it on removal, and it was not dropped in the process of removing the motor.

    Can this be welded??

Are the epoxy metal weld glues that are advertised any good?

I hate to spend money on a part that has just been overhauled.

    Thanks for the vent!

The epoxy glue will be Ok to glue a card on with your phone number on it so if it just falls off you may get it back ( Norweld 9 Ogden street Bungalow) if it is aluminium

Aluminium handles don't like pipe extensions.

Glue does work, I had a clean break in the aluminium handle of a pipe wrench.

Fixed it with superglue and after spreading the glue over both surfaces I clamped both parts together in the vice.

Still working after months of use, however, if there had been any oil or dirt at all in the break, that repair would not be successful.

Well I took it to N.B Prop works in Cairns. Said he could weld it back on, and to call him later today. Called, and all fixed. Said that an other was also cracked, and he welded it also. Not the prettiest, but smooth on the inside where it matters.

$50 dollars later, and same day service. Not bad.

Reco Starter for $50 (cracked housing) and $30 for the contacts, and plunger from the U.K.

Took about 20 minutes to re install. Fired up first time, so am happy.

    Cheers,

    Ken
