    Question Defender Owners with 3+kids who go touring.....

    This is mainly aimed at those Defender owners who do a fair bit of touring and who have 3+Kids &/or Teenagers.....
    I'm slowly researching for our next touring vehicle and would like to hear from other owners who go touring with their kids, their experiences, etc,

    Things I'm interested in is:

    1. Comfort for the 2nd row passengers, especially when there's a least 3 kids onboard....
    2. Leg room for the 2nd row passengers
    3. Room between each child in the 2nd row (ie: Their not squeeshed together touching each other)
    4. Overall room when touring into remote areas... I'm assuming there is enough room for all your gear + spare parts, etc
    5. When not touring - how is the Defender being used as a daily driver to/from work?


    Do others have any helpful advice or info that would help me in my research (ie: Reliability / Towing - Campertrailer &/or Caravan / Remote Servicing, etc?)

    I'm mainly interested in the Defender (110 Wgn or 130 Dual Cab) comments and not any D3>D4 comments at the moment.....


    I started out originally focusing on going back to the last of the Toyota Factory TD 100's as I thought this would best cater for both the remote touring & then also for the times we wanted to tow our Caravan, but since coming across a few Defenders now and reading some Trip Reports, I find myself a little bit hooked on them now and their icon status.....

    The rear seats of the 130 are very upright. Ok for small kids but would not put older ones in there for longer trips. I guess could be modified but have not heard of anyone doing this??

    How old are your kids?,unless you threaten them with being dumped on the side of the road it's been my experience that sooner or later they will **** each other off and start fighting regardless of room,in a defender there is enough for two kids and a cooler in the middle or three kids without the cooler,there's lots of room under the seats for books,toys anything else kids carry,plenty of head room and you can get TV screens that fit on the head rests so they can watch movies.Heaps of room in the back for your gear fridge,food box,tent etc or you can fit a roof rack,all over good,the 130 has a stupid amount of capacity,5 people with a ton of payload,not as easy to park though.     Another option is to do what I've done with our 130 dual cab, that is fit a center front seat from a single cab defender ute to make it a six seater dual cab. We have three kids, they all love sitting in the front middle which leaves a space between the other two in the back, priceless for peace! You could do the same with a 110 also.

    I think the age of your kids will be the deciding factor. I wouldn't put kids in their teens in the second row personally, but thats just me. The 130 seats are def more upright then the 110, so I think that vehicle would punish teenagers even more.

    Currently the kids ages are 12, 11, 9 so I don't have a real problem now , but my next tourer I want to last me a long time which means its got to be suitable for the kids when they are teenagers..... My 1 st preference is the 110, mainly due to it being used as a daily driver and it being easier to park, etc.

    Pat, thanks for that. Good to know about the room under the seats... We usually try and stop and stretch our legs and get the kids out of the car every 2-3hrs before WW3 starts in the back.

    I assume that the interior dimensions of the 110 are all pretty much the same from '94 models all the way through to the current 110's ??

    Yup, it's just the 2007 on had different seats and dash with good air con.

    The 2007 Puma defender has a much improved interior.

    There's a nice 2009 Defender wagon on car sales at a Qld dealer with reasonable km and bar/rack asking $36 drive away. Taking one for a drive is the best way to see if it will suit.

    Most agree 12MY got the improved Puma motor.

    No other wagon compares with a Defender load carrying space. However, if towing a camper you shouldn't need as much space. Looking at your list makes me think a 2.7 D3 will suit better. Even a D3 S on coils.
