Hi Andy,
Bit of a long post, but here we go.
I can't speak for Oz or event the whole of WA, but I needed the diff fixed while I was driving a hired car that I was paying for, so time was at the premium.
I inquired at every contact and lead passed to me on the WA AULRO network as well as our club TeamW4's sponsors and network. Nobody here actually appear to stock them (they'll import at a premium) and as its a "third party" product when I supply, nobody was interested in offering any type of warranty.
Ashcroft's would honor their 1 year warranty, but I would have to pay to remove and ship it, they would then assess and return at their cost while I have to pay to fit it again...
I have been reliably informed (Indie specialist in the UK, not Ashcroft!) that the Ashcroft ATB LSD actually compliments and enhances the Puma's TC and therefore it would have been my first choice if I lived anywhere else in the world or had the skills to install it myself...
Like I said, I really only use the ARB locker as a strengthened 4 pin diff because their supply and install price and 5 year warranty beat every other option (including a replacement 2 pin diff) by a very long margin.
To your second question about what I would class as off road... Over here in WA (Perth) we have four distinct "off road" applications.
Sand on the beaches and a very fine sand in the hills up to about 10km from the coast. These we obviously encounter on club days out and you can tackle dunes up to any severity you feel comfortable with. Secondly we go to the hills surrounding Perth up to about 100km inland which have mostly laterite gravels that wash out in deep ruts. Lots of articulation up and down hill, again to your comfort and skill level. Thirdly would be black mud down south of Perth in the Harvey area (bovine agriculture area) driving on forestry tracks and fire breaks, mostly in winter when its wet. Again mostly club days with a bunch of Land Rovers. The fourth would be the same as everyone else when you're touring or working on the high speed gravel roads between the very sparsely spaced towns of the interior.
Most of us over here have balanced set ups to be able to take part in all 4 applications, but everything is always planned to accommodate people with limited experience and hesitance to scratch brand new cars.
Cheers,
Lou
Thanks for the detailed response, you raised some important points
I am planning dual Ashcroft LSD in time, hopefully I can find a brisbane shop to do the deed ,
So really it is off (formed) road, I have been taking it too literally.
By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.
apologies to Socrates
