Thread: Soon-to-be owner: steel rims or alloy?

Certainly the aftermarket alloy rims I had on my D1s required different wheel nuts but they came with the rims.

I have a full set of nuts for steel wheels stored in the shed, so that won't be a problem.
I did discover that the steels could be fitted to the D1 with the alloy wheel nuts, which just stuck out a long way and looked silly, but would work in an emergency, but I haven't tried that with the Defender's alloy wheel nuts.

I prefer steel rims purely for the fact that it is easier to repair a tyre, i.e. easier to get the tyre off the rim, with bush repair tools. I have a R&R Beadbreaker that is part of my trip tool kit, the safety ridge on alloy rims makes it very difficult to demount the tyre, don't know about other tyre tool brands.
The later alloy wheel nuts have a taper to suit steel rims as they started supplying a steel instead of an alloy as a spare, so made the nuts to suit either in a pinch. These nuts look ridiculous on steel wheels though.
