Well Happy New Year from Solihull!

Last night the Defender broke down, at midnight, with Mrs Samblers out driving on her own, leaving her stranded on the highway and unable to accurately describe the symptoms (engine died, burning smell, warning lamps on, funny noises which I just ignored etc etc).

Oh god what has she done? I immediately thought of this post and my sticky ignition...

Tow home and then tow this morning to LR - diagnosis is stuck ignition switch causing stuck starter motor and therefore failure of both. $1500 up in smoke.

It sounds like we were up for an ignition switch, since this was dieing anyway... but the starter was murdered. By my wife. Dont tell her i said that!

And the remedy is to replace the ignition barrel, that wouldn't normally include the switch on the end. (unless Land Rover describe things differently).
Lubrication of the barrel may still work.

I think they actually call it something like the 'ignition lock', as it also contains the steering lock...
