MY13 40k Service. Things to look out for, ask about etc.

Title says it all really but our MY13 90 is about to go in for its 40k service. Just looking for some head's up on anything to keep an eye out for or that we should specifically ask about at this stage (two thirds of the way through warranty). No problems at all, runs really well apart from slightly high fuel consumption (11l/100km, but we have MTRs, front and rear bars and a roof rack) and the typical backlash.

Do they update the ECU software etc. on these services or is it a case of "aint broke don't fix it"?

    Cheers

Just be carefull they don't hit you up for a repack of the bearings at around $800... They did it on my 130 without asking.. When I gave them a serve, they said "as the vehicle obviously operates in arduous conditions, it is a requirement to maintain warrantee..I said, BS..80k yes, 40k no way.. They met me half way

Its my understanding that they will only change software if your VIN batch has an update or patch. It will come up on the computer if its neccesary and they usually don't tell you about it (most probably in case you complain I suppose).

I paid a bit extra at 40K to change all the EP90 out (diffs and TC). The rest they are pretty thorough on (Southern LR in Perth gives us pretty good service).

Let them have a look at the backlash again. Mine has completely gone, so it is possible.

    Cheers,

    Lou

Hi Pat, do you mean they should do the diffs and TC at 40k? Pretty sure they only do them at 80k if going by-the-book.

    Hi LF
40K is change the diff oils definitely, I think Gbox and TC is 80 as you have said.
Assume you have had the turbo hose recall done.
How is the front diff pinion seal, mine has leaked since the first service, a few I've met have had the same problem.
I have had a number (3) of the bolts on my door hinges come loose. Pain to tighten yourself.
Get an estimate on cost, before you put it in, I didn't and got a bit of a suprise.

My 2.4 will go in for a 60,000 km service soon but the manual doesn't list what has to be done. Is there some way I can get a service schedule for it as even though its out of warranty I'd like to make sure it gets the factory recommended services? Is the service schedule on line somewhere?

    Mick,
DEFENDER2.NET - View topic - Puma service intervals

This is as close as I can find, without getting out of bed
Off course it assumes normal motoring, not arduous.
200k for gear box and coolant surprised me.

Personally, with a new second hand vehicle I would change all your fluids and filters at the next service, for peace of mind.

I will be doing the regular 20,000 cycle with LRA but will sneak in a few changes with an independent for second opinion, oversight.
So far 5,000 for the oil , prob 40,000 for the drive line.
By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.

Thanks AndyG, I have bookmarked it. I remembered I had joined that site in the past, but have forgotten my password, so will have to reset it.
The service book says our Defender has had 10,000km services, which is good, but it doesn't give much information about what was actually done, except that the clutch was replaced at 39,000km.
I intend to get a local LR specialist to do the same services as the dealer would have done if it was still under warranty, except at 10,000 km intervals. I think I will get all fluids done at 60,000km just for peace of mind.I know 5W30 and other oils are supposed to be OK for 20,000kms, but I just think more regular changes are good for long life, as we intend to keep this truck forever.
Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Yes Merry Xmas and a prosperous new year to all, of course, we no longer get a service book, it's all on line., yet to work that one out.

We need to keep these in good nick for our grand kids so they can be cool when everyone else are driving around in electric swatch cars
