    MY99 Td5 rear Axle shaft working outwards

    Hi All,
    My Td5 (MY99) rear axle has recently started working its way outwards from the hub and has popped off the rubber cap covering the rear axle shaft & bearing. A gentle tap pushes it back in but it comes out again 1-2cm after driving 10-15km. What's supposed to hold the axle shaft in? The RAVE workshop manual shows a bolted cap holding it in but there's none visible on the rear of a Td5. Appreciate your help.

    A '99 is a very early Td5 and I'm not too familiar with them, but I'm pretty certain my '98 300Tdi 90 had the same arrangement as my current Tdci 90 as per the photos.

    Not sure what holds the half shafts in place, but I don't think that is the correct diagram for your car... (unless 110's still have those solid final drives?).

    The inside edge of the plines hold in in at the rear the circlip stops it from dissapearing tontonthe diff.

    If you have a maxi drive style long spline half shaft you Wil have this problem if you try to use the stoc flanges as opposed to the deeper flanges..

    The field solution is
    pull the shaft and flange.
    install the flange backwards until the circlip groove is just clear of the inside edge of the flange, install the circlip Nd then carefully file anew circlip groove at the face of the flange (inside edge of the axles spline)

    P
    Remove the circlip and flange, insert a circlip in your new groove (or tightly wind in some tie wire)
    Assemble as per normal ensuring your new checkup does not rub on the stub axle

    Had the same problem with the 6x6 on our trip, there was ~15mm end float on the axle, and the caps were different to std 110 (deeper IIRC)

    Mechanic checked it yesterday and tightened the bearing which was slightly loose. He thought the loose bearing may have caused the axle to worm its way outwards. He also recalled a circlip near the diff usually helped hold the axle in place and maybe some wear/tear had allowed movement outwards from the diff end of the axle.
    I've uploaded a photo, showing the (new) rubber boot fitted over the end of the axle (seated correctly where it belongs). There is definitely no threaded or bolted cap locking the axle in place like that shown by WrinkleArthur (and Loubrey) - but agree that would be nice.
    I've got a 500km trip this weekend so will see how it goes. Will let you know.

    The black thing behind the rubber cap is your final drive, exactly like mine. You just can't see the six bolts as they are behind the wheel...

    My ZU alloys' opening is just big enough so that that you can fit HD final drive flanges like those Wrinklearthur posted.

    Yours are "early" style hubs, Martyn. On the 300 TDI and early TD5 (IIRC) the drive hub is thinner where it bolts to the axle, and similarly the rubber cap is shorter.

    After driving 400km over the weekend, including 20km of easy 4WD'ing, the axle remained in-place without any trouble. Tightening the wheel bearing seems to have stopped the axle from working its way out. Next visit to the mechanic I'll get the splines and diff checked for wear & tear. Thanks all.
