A (Fault?) in my 2011 Puma Defender

    Hey guys,

I was hoping to get some advice. I have a 2011 Puma Defender 90, which is a beast! But, about a year ago it seemed to start letting in water to the driver's side footwell whenever it rained. Took it back to the place of purchase....and now 13 months later and as it is still covered by a warranty, 6 attempts by the same place it still seems to be doing the same problem. The company has said they've replaced countless seals (on the door, windshield), they've re-sealed the brake line.....but it still seems to be happening.

Unfortunately, it's not letting me upload the files but if anyone has a response I'm happy to email you the photos.

The water in my 2008 110 used to come dripping in from the roof - it would come in and drip on me while I was driving. With the Mulgo pop top and a shiny new roof, this no longer occurs, but the water is still coming in like yours!

I think it's either from the seal under the windscreen or it's from the firewall.

    Check the Water Ingress Manual.

Yes that's right, Land Rover actually produce a manual on where you're going to find leaks in your new vehicle...and how you can deal with them.

    90Ro,

As Bobby said, they leak... they all do in some shape or form. Those that don't leak yet, will eventually...

The only place mine leaks (2010, 90) is somewhere above the driver side seat belt roll. Whenever the car's been parked in the rain, I have a wet seat belt and the damp streak across my shirt to go with it... I've looked for it, but I've been unsuccessful thus far. I have in fact never owned a Defender that didn't leak in its own unique way.

In all honesty the chances of finding the leak and stopping it is slim at best (some chaps on here have been successful, but they are few and far between) and hunting them usually only makes them worse, or starts to look an absolute mess.

Good luck and hopefully you are one of the few, but owning and loving a Defender is appreciating it strengths and abilities and overlooking the comparatively minor pains that goes with owning it.

    Cheers,

    Lou

As I've just discovered my first leak in my 2008 Defender 90 (admittedly after standing out all night in a pretty solid downpour) I'm guess I'm pleased to hear that this is "normal behaviour"! What a contrary kind of world we Landy owners live in!

My leaking into the foot well was fixed by sealing the windscreen rubber. Water sneaks past and comes out behind the dash then running along and dripping above your foot. Not a drop now.
There is a tech document about it (in addition to the water ingress manual).

Is that the actual windscreen rubber itself? To be honest, I've never personally seen one leak there. I've had them out and back in using a piece of braided rope and they usually don't require sealing - unless they've changed the Tdci's windscreen rubber (haven't needed to do that to a Puma)?

The main culprit is usually the seal between the windscreen frame and bulkhead, seeing as the Tdci doesn't have bulkhead flaps anymore, which would be the bigger culprit...

Mine's a 2010 and she only started leaking during the winter of 2014, so eventually they all do.

    Cheers,

    Lou

I have a 2005 Defender, and have been chasing leaks since new. I think I have managed in the last few years to locate the main source. I have siliconed along the rubber gasket where the windscreen panel meets the firewall, and it should be able to fold down if hinges were installed. I am not sure if the newer ones without the vent flaps have this. Also if you open the doors, looking at this same joining area, I have filled this with silicone to prevent water running down the door seal, and then into the gap behind the rubber gasket. Floor has been dry for the last wet season, but it has not started raining up here this year yet. Time will tell.

    Good luck,

    Ken

    +1 from me.
I was certain it was windscreen rubber but when i swaped side panels and took the roof off,the leak was between the windscreen frame and the firewall and it dripped under the dash.
You can temporarily stick a duct tape over this joint and spray with water.
