Thread: Snow Cowls.

I don't know a great deal in regards to particular brands. But when I first started researching I looked into the original MOD spec cowls, which were made of steel. I couldn't find any on ebay, so I called these guy's in the UK.
MUD Snow Cowl

I've used them before for other bits and pieces and they were very helpful. They pointed out that most snow cowls now days are made of UV stable ABS plastic, mainly because if the steel cowls copped a hit during off roading they had a habit of cutting through your wing.


I've also had excellent customer service from this seller, who does the Defendoor for the fuel filler recess. They also make snow cowls.

They are based in the Czech Republic. They also state the same thing in regards to the steel cowls.

The prices are all pretty similar.
I think from memory Terrafirma also make a cowl.

However I got mine from ebay as they were selling them as a pair, they look the business. I guess only time will tell in regards to quality.

I've had the Mud Stuff snow cowls on for a bit over a year now and they began fading about 6mths ago. Not badly, just getting a bit chalky. My car is kept undercover as well.

I suspect if left in full sun they'd go white eventually.

That aside I have no complaints about them. Would prefer them to steel ones.

What a load of tosh, the steel ones would cut in to the wing.

If a plastic one took a hit it would smash into pieces .

Another advantage of the steel ones you can stand on them with out damaging them.

MUD - made from ABS, but with no mention of UV stabilisation.

Defendoor - ABS, with UV stabilisation.

A quick google shows that standard ABS has poor UV characteristics and is not suitable for outdoor use. So I'd lean towards Defendoor, but a quick email to the MUD guys to clarify their ABS/UV status could change that.

I've dealt with both previously and unlike some others I've come across, they're pretty reliable.
