    Snow Cowls.

Well I decided to fit up some snow cowls on my Defender. What!...... snow in summer. Well its is Melbourne, and I do love camping up in The High Country during the winter months.

Originally I didn't do it for aesthetic reason's. It was to solve a leaky passenger footwell. I work at a quarry, and the car gets covered in the most horrible dust day in day out. When it rains the dust turns to mud and regularly blocks the 3 bung/drain holes in the heater intake ducting. Hence the water in the footwell.

So I was looking for just the one cowl, but I found 2, one left and one right on ebay.
Land Rover Defender 90 110 130 Wing TOP Heater Intake Snow Cowls LRDSS L R | eBay

It was on special when I purchased, I think 15% off.

I remember reading somewhere, that someone had fitted one to the blanked off wing top on the drivers side to help dissipate the heat from the engine bay. It makes sense really, when you have the turbo spinning away on that side, so any way of helping the heat escape wouldn't hurt.
As the cowls bolt directly over the wing top grills, I purchased a britpart one for the drivers side. Took it for a run up the highway this arvo, I don't have an ultraguage or scanguage tool yet, so I have no idea if there was any real drop in engine temp. But when I got back home there was a decent amount of heat coming out of the drivers side cowl. Considering initially it wasn't done for looks, I reckon they don't look half bad. Though I reckon some would disagree, but hey each to our own.

One of the reasons for this post, was that a couple of friends who are also Defender owners were thinking along the same lines, and the thought of a group buy was suggested. They just wanted to see them fitted up first.
So hope it helps, cheers Ian.

Having fitted a fair few of these this year ( the Genuine MOD ones ) they do actually serve a useful task.

The snow thing aside ( but Iam told we do have snow here ) they serve to stop water/sand Ingress to the heater matrix, a lot of the vehicles that had these fitted had very rusty heater box components, as well as plenty of dirt, sand etc in the wing.

I think if you do a lot of beach/off road work then it's a usefully product.
Be mindful that the cheap plastic ones, will fade and become brittle over time.

Would sand be flicked up from the tyres into the cowl when you are turning?

Don't know, when driving in water, the water contains the sand so both would fill the open vent.

I think they might be, can't be up to the job mind, or why would you design the thing in the first place.

It's a "fart valve" like on the 300Tdi's air intake pipe. Needs to be squeezed to clear out dust and organic material build up (which in return requires you to unscrew the intake grill...)

    Cheers,

    Lou

I have no problem with the cleaning of the 3 "fart valve's", as I used to do it on a pretty regular basis with the 300Tdi I owned prior to the Puma.

My problem is the extreme dust created by my work environment.

It's not unusual, at the end of the working day for the car to be covered in 2-5mm of dust, especially if the wind is blowing from the south. All it takes is for a quick 5 minute downpour of rain and the fart valve's are overwhelmed with sludge, and there's a lovely pool of water sitting in the passenger footwell.

I was forever unscrewing the vent cover and unblocking the bungs.

Two of the bungs can actually be reached easier from underneath the car.
