Question Defender 110 Tdi Noob Questions.....

    Hey Fellas.....

I purchased a Defender 110 Tdi (un-reg) a few months ago and just parked it down the paddock until I had time to learn a few things about it..... Well, I bought it up and parked it next to the shed and had a quick look inside and a bit of a play around inside b4 I had to head off to work again......

Some questions I would like to ask those in the know....

The VENTS below the Windscreen - How far do they open up as one of mine on the drivers side doesn't open up at all due to a broken lever and the passengers side one only opens as small amount....

Are these easily accessible to get to, to repair, etc?

The interior fan and vent controls and A/C Controls:

Where is the A/C Controls? (see pics) The Centre Dial and outer Dial - Are they A/C and Temp adjustments?

Is this the Normal FAN SPEED lever?

Are these your Heater Control Lever (L/H) and the Lever on the R/H - is that just for directing Fan flow up onto the Windscreen?

Sorry for these Dump questions, but I thought here would be the best place to ask them ......

No dumb questions. When you think about it these machines are unlike anything else on the road.
The vents are meant to open approx 45 degrees, at least that's what mine do from memory. I am missing the fine mesh, and open is enough to let a good splash of water in driving through puddles too fast the flapper is easy to get off, just squeeze the hinge pins and push them out. Not sure about sourcing new brackets, worst case they don't look hard to make your own.
The AC, one knob is fan speed he other is how cold (!) the air is, not sure which is which.
That is the fan speed control, sort of.the bottom two detents you feel are fan low and high speed. Above that I believe it closes a flapper to stop air flowing through. It's not a variable speed fan as the picture might suggest!
And the last pic yes, temp on left, flow control on right. With that in the middle you get a little air on legs and on window.
Pictures make questions like these so much more understandable

Thanks for that..... Getting to the lever internally for the air-vent , I assume I have to remove a section of the dash?

From memory, to service the vents you have to remove the shelf top thing across the front of the inside of the vehicle, and it's also easier to get at the bits if you remove the bottom shelf as well.

You should get copies of the parts book and workshop manual, both of which you'll find in pdf on the web. The parts book is helpful when trying to work out all of the bits that may need removing when carrying out work that's not described in the workshop manual.
