Are you getting a click from the starter?
Might be the starter contacts a very common issue

Turning over but might not start,, jump it of another car and it eventually will...thinking the starter may not have enough voltage to crank fast enough

If it is the original starter motor you could be in need of one of these kits.
Discovery Defender TD5 2 5 Diesel 98 04 Starter Solenoid Repair KIT Basic KIT | eBay

I fitted mine with the starter in situ although it is a bit fiddly.
And remember to disconnect the +ive battery terminal if you do need to do it.

The fault is usually intermittent at first till eventually no go.
And a lot cheaper than a new starter.
And mine is an 02 as well.

    Cheers,
    Paul.

Nah it's a fuel issue , the air blead back to the tank should have an air out function yet stop fuel draining back into the tank .....if I can find one.... If you give it a good prime b4 starting its usually fine even being jumped by 2nd car it takes a hell of a lot to start when it's been playing up
I'll deal with that first , it's had a new fp regulator plus injector loom and injector seals and o rings , plus a known good fuel pump tested on it....that I'll look at after I stop the fuel draining back into the tank overnight ( that being starter solenoid)
    Cheers mark
( ps it's never not started eventualy , just a bit like Russian roulette at the moment)

I had a similar issue with my 2000 td5. I made an earth off the back of the starter where it bolts to the gearbox then straight the the chassis.
    Worked for me.
    Good luck!
