Puma 2010 - died - potential glow plug issue

First experience of temporary death in my 2010 Puma. Stopped at intersection to turn left and engine shut down. No cough or splutter, almost like turning off with the key. Got a push off the road.

Did usual checks, under hood, fuses etc and nothing unusual. Also nil codes shown on the scan gauge. Battery was cranking but engine would not turn over. I noticed the glow plug symbol on the dash wasn't showing on turn key.

After 30 mins of trying, not trying, waiting etc. the glow plug light suddenly showed itself on the dash again and away we went. All back to normal. An intermittent fault like this is sometimes worse than a permanent one.

So has anyone had an issue like this before and chased it back down to a relay or to the glow plugs themselves...or to some other area?

    Cheers

Could possibly be a loose connection on the main power relay located under the drivers seat.

Or the 60Amp fuse for glow plug relay located in the same position.

Did any warning lights come on before the temporary death? Such as glow plug and oil pressure? Did the temp gauge also go up?

A friend in the UK had issues with the loom chaffing behind the engine, and thus blowing the fuse. But if your glow plug light came back on after a while then probably not the fuse.

    Hope it helps, cheers, Ian.

    Thanks Ian.

Sounds feasible as I did put some stuff in my ex box earlier that day, maybe knocked the fuse or relay? I tested all of the fuses and they were good, but didn't check the relay. Will have a look.

No warning lights and no temp rise either mate. I had only driven 1km or so after start up when this occurred.

    Weird...

The glow plugs are only used to start a cold engine... and in OZ, I don't think they will ever be energised!

Once a diesel is going, as long as there is fuel, it will keep going! Sounds like a fuel feed injection issue... ecu related perhaps...

Will be interested to know what the OBD fault codes are.

    Hope you get it sorted!

    tcf,

That glow plug circuit apparently apparently features in the immobiliser's operation and it only uses the glow plug symbol as an indicator that the car is immobilised or not, possibly via the ECU.

The reason I know this is that when my MY10 Puma was 2 month's old the same connection worked loose and the exact thing you described happened. Engine just switched off without a splutter or any other indication. There will also not be any fault code as there is no fault to record, just a connection break in the circuit.

I phoned Land Rover Australia on the help line and they had absolutely no clue. I ended up phoning the 24 hour Land Rover UK helpline and the guy talked me through finding the connection and just pushing the fuse back into its holder. Land Rover Australia never heard of it at that stage, but they did check all the crimps and connections.

Check the fuse and crimp on those brown wires and hopefully you're OK.

    Cheers,

    Lou

    Thanks, Lou.

Like I said I had put some stuff in the ex box out of sight and took it out on starting the vehicle. Maybe it was knocked and the connections are a bit dodgy. I have made sure all looks ok, which it seems to be now. And, touch wood, hasn't happened again.
