    APT Steering Guard Install

    Howdy,
Can someone confirm that to install the APT steering guard on a MY15 Puma that I need to completely remove/not reinstall the trestle looking assembly that is currently on there? It looks pretty much like a round steel bar that goes from one side to the other and appear to simply stiffen and somewhat protect the steering linkages.

Thanks in advance for your time!

    Hi Neo,

Yes, all steering guards (except the steel one from Frontrunner) utilises the same holes in the chassis as the trestle looking arrangement.

So remove it and the APT guard will fit perfectly, as everything APT manufactures does.

    Cheers,

    Lou

x 2. Plus if you have any trouble at all, Ben Woodgate from APT is very helpful with advice about fitting his products.

Thanks guys! Happy to have some confirmation............I'll get that sorted today, but was just a bit unnerving as it's the first time I've wrenched on the new Defender.

    Cheers,

It is really an easy install, but just make sure you start all the bolts and hold everything in place while gradually tightening everything in turn.

Here's the fitting advice Ben sent me:

"Remove the round tube factory steering protector. Undo and remove the bolts with the factory tie down points on the lower front section of the chassis.

Remove the fixing nut that holds the pan hard mounting bracket to the chassis.

The black brackets mount to the inside of the chassis with the stickers facing outwards.
Use the 2 x M10 x 120mm bolts to locate the front of the steering guard mounting brackets on the chassis.

Driver side - the rear mounting hole goes over the bolt that holds the pan hard mounting bracket.

Passenger side - Use the M12 x 110mm bolt to go through the existing gusseted bracket under the chassis (panhard mount location for left hand drive vehicles).

Offer the bash plate into position and start all 4 x M10 x 30mm button head bolts. Once all bolts are started, then begin tightening.

The sequence I prefer is to do the black mounting brackets first followed by the bash plate at the end. It's personal preference if you choose to reuse the tie down points, they will fit with the longer bolts supplied in the kit."

Good luck, it is a great bit of kit.

Here's the video from my install. Nothing to be afraid of.
