    Advice on engine transplant please

    Hi all
have just got my first ever Landrover delivered
its a 96 defender that needs a transplant due to a rod coming through the block

i have a engine out of a 96 discovery ready to go in and during prep for the old engine to come out i have noticed a few differences i,m hoping you guys can help with

the first one is the turbo on the existing tdi300 has the outlet facing straight up

the discovery engine has a different looking manifold and the outlet is facing to the side (see pics)

also the aircon compressor is different so can anyone here offer any advise

The turbo on the new disco engine is the standard/correct turbo as far as i can see, the turbo on your 110 looks lika a 200tdi set up, im sure others will chime in on that one

    Thumbs up

    Hi
thanks for replying to my thread

i know the turbo has been replaced and had some work done/tuning done by Cooper automotive? or something before the rod was thrown out the side so that may explain it

If I remember correctly, the Defender 200Tdi had the turbo in the middle of the engine but up high near the tappet cover, while the Disco version had the turbo down low and to the rear (which interferes with the footwell of the defender).

The 300tdi on the other hand had the turbo position standardised for both I believe.

    Hmm,

Yeah looks different to my old 200tdi and different to any 200tdi in google images.
So you may be running into some trouble just with connection of the exhaust and some ancillaries.
As long as it bolts up to the Gearbox fine (which I'm guessing it will) you should be right.
I reckon if it's had a tune-up that might be an aftermarket garrett strapped on there. Check the diametre of the exhaust/the mufflers as it might have a bigger diameter too.
You COULD strip the turbo and exhaust/intake manifolds from your old engine, if they're any good/in better condition than the donor one graft those onto your new engine.
Obviously, this approach is just opening you up to a bit more work there, tuning the fuel pump and installing the right gauges to keep it safe (EGT and Boost).

If you've got the time and the money and if that turbo is good to go might be worth it. But if you stick with the standard fare of the donor 300tdi you should be happy enough and all you should need to modify will be the exhaust where she bolts up to the turbo. And those pointless ancillaries like Aircon, soft :P.

tuning up the tdi's is easy, but in standard tune they're honestly pretty good. While youve got the donor engine out on the stand are you going to do any preventative maintenance? Like timing belt or valve caps?

Thanks for the chat so far guys
i have been looking some more and i think as redrover says it is a 200tdi manifold and different turbo mounted to the 300tdi engine

the guy i bought it from says it had a new turbo, head and custom tune done so i guess that explains it the head and turbo are pretty fresh from what i understand

it also has a 2.5 to 3 inch exhaust fitted that is hopefully not too loud

if anyone that knows there way around these things is interested in chopping me out for a day with the engine they could have the turbo and head setup if they wanted i am in Werribee

the engine i have to fit has done 205k and come with a full ulr service history to 195k so i should not have to touch it hopefully

I would replace the timing belt and the head gasket while you have it out. Timing belts are due every 100k. Head gaskets commonly fail at 230-260k km.

^^ What he said. It's probably in good nick but if it got sold at 205k that tells me the mechanic said "time for a timing belt" and the owner said "Yeah OK Im selling this thing".

The belt and the gasket will be a damn site easier to do with the engine on a stand and you'll thank yourself later.

As far as the A/C goes, leave the current system intact, the compressor will move to the side to allow removing and refitting of the engine.
The compressor will bolt up to the donor motor.
