Help with Propshaft for 110 V8 85 county

Went to install a bunch of goodies in the old girl on the weekend. Got through the new half shafts and drive flanges and then went to do the prop shaft.

The new one was different thickness but didn't think this would be a problem. The issue is that the new one is about 80-100mm shorter. Checked the part number as far as I could and FRC8389 seems to be the right one. Anyone able to confirm if this is correct or if there is another?

Anyone have the compressed length of 8389?

Vin is BAxxxxxx so after the AA vin that changed and well before the KA which is the change in the 90s.

If it has taller springs and shocks could the propshaft have been changed for more length?

Not sure what to do....the parts guys is looking into it but no call back yet.

    Hi

I've just ordered but not received a new rear prop for my 85 V8 county.
Same PN# as what you have.

What are the open and closed measurements on your original and new shaft?

I can measure up mine later this week when i have access to my machine.

When i get my new shaft which should be very soon I can tell you them both (new and old) too.

The old tail shaft is 1090 mm in length compressed and the new one is 1010 mm in length. I will need to check the open measurement, but this will depend on position along the spline. I can measure from the two end points on the vehicle.

Who are you ordering yours from?

VIN isn't so good a tool for a vehicle 30 years old, you are better off knowing the gearbox and diff type and cross referencing, as these things get changed occasionally.
Alternatively, order from Tom Woods in the US and get one custom made to suit your vehicle. That is what I did front and rear for my '85 County.

Checked with supplier and it appears that the length on the one they sent is wrong and they have another in stock which is only 20mm different to the one I have which will fit fine.

I have checked the gearbox and diff on mine and it is all standard as far as I can tell. only thing that has changes is springs, wheels and power steering.

anyway when it turns up I will compare and put a photo up.

New prop shaft turned up today. now is right length and size in general. Loomks like a wrong labelled item in the warehouse.

Should be able to put it in this weekend and take the rest of the backlash out of the rear drive line. The two axles and drive flanges removed about 2/3 of what was there. Looking forward to not having the baby it off the line every time to stop the "clunk".

Hi Junior, is your V8 a 5 speed box model or a 4 speed? If it is a 5 speed you will find a lot of the backlash clunk could be caused by wear in the transfer case, particularly spine wear on the gearbox output shaft and probably some in the centre differential as well.

Has the bullet proof 4 speed. I think there might be a little in the centre diff but most was in the badly worn splines on the prop and the drive flanges. The drive flanges splines had been filled with a gasket silicon to stop noise at some stage.

I now have HD flanges as well, so should last another 30 years.

Got the new prop shaft installed today. Got some assitance from my daughter who is keen to learn, and the extra hands while i tighted the nuts up was great.
Did the transfer case rear oil seal while we were there.

The transmission brake was completely drenched in oil from the leak. three cans of brake clean and a few days drying out and it looks pretty good now. And now no more oil leak, although when we dropped the oil in the case it was still full so just looks worse then it is.
