    New v used ?

Hi all, first post after looking around for the last month, so thought id introduce myself and ask some questions.

Just sold my GU Patrol 4.2td that I have had for the past 6 years and seriously looking for a D90.

Local dealer has a new Corris Silver D90 that we are negotiating on and i like the idea of the new car warrantee and low km. Approx $43k inc on roads

Looking at the second hand market there are a number about(only looking at the 2.2L) with various km and equipment, one in particular has most of the accessories I will eventually fit(tow bar, snorkel, bulbar, side steps, all genuine LR) plus a few nice extras, like the part leather seats, sun roof..Its a 2012 model with 74kkm and six months warrantee left. $37k + on roads

Question is, do I look at the 2012 model and use the $ I save to finish kitting it out (roof rack, dual batteries, winch(maybe) ?

Its been fully serviced by LR, but my research of local 'specialists' all indicate that the standard LR service regime is a bit light on ? Car has had clutch replaced at 20kkm due to squeaking. Seller says it hasn't been of road and is in top condition.

I lean more to the new vehicle, my wife leans more to the 2012 for financial reasons and that is is mostly as we want it.

What are your experiences with 2.2 Defenders as they get some km under their belt?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

    cheers Cookie

74K for a vehicle of that age is not over the top, but it's certainly not "low ks" is it?
Go for a new one. The price difference even now, is not that great, & over the years will be negligible.
Don't delay too long, or you may find that the new one you're looking up will be gone.

No one can answer for the financial side of things obviously - 74km for a 2 year old car is a lot of k's by my reckoning but then these are diesels

I wanted to use my car as a family adventure tool, i priced up new but then couldnt see any point in taking it immediately off road and getting scratches/dings etc., and ended up buying a 2nd hand car with some warranty left (which i needed) and a few dings and accessories (bar, snorkel, tint, tow, etc.). Better value for my situation

So decide how you will use the car and then decide wether the new car premium is justified.

    Agree with this.

Offer to buy the wife something nice at the same time to offset any 'issues' with not following her orders

A nice long 3 years of warranty, and 3 years of free servicing, do wonders to the total running cost comnparison of a brand new one.

Especially if you are unlucky and buy a nearly new used defender that I've seen pictures of on facebook - nearly floating in a lake... (Or it's just built on a Friday.)

as with a few of the other members, I'd buy new if I were in your situation. This way you can customise it your way, and get guarantees/warranty from the dealer

Hi Cookie , you may know this , but just in case you don't , Land Rover have a special on until the end of the month . They are paying all on road costs , on new . That for me was worth about $ 5k so that quite a lot , and worth inquiring about . good luck , whatever way you go . Jim

Thanks for all your comments and advice guys, ended up agreeing terms for the new Corris Grey D90 with the part leather interior(as long as we like the colour in the flesh).

Hoping to get it next Thursday, then straight down to Melbourne in it for a drive of a Lambo and a Ferrari (a great birthday present from the wife).

Will let you know how we go.

    cheers cookie

Hi Cookie, just noticed you have made your decision just as I was about to reply but thought my experience may still be of value to someone else that looks at this thread at a later date.

I went through the same thing about 6 months back and bought the second hand one with low kms (11,000). However, when I went to undertake some of the mods I wanted, I found problems. Sill long range tanks weren't compatible with the side steps, replacement long range tank was not compatible with the tow bar. Would now prefer different bull bar and a rear wheel carrier that opens with the back door.

So I've learnt two things, its better to have an unmodified vehicle as the starting point, and it would be good to make a list of the mods you want, do your research and ensure everything is compatible.

All that said, I'm still very happy with "Clyde" and wouldn't change him now. I also managed to find solutions to most of my dilemmas.
