Actually I would suspect the locker. A neighbour of ours had one fit to his Hilux, and it used to clatter something cronic.
The best way to explain it is when braking to a halt, if I remove the brake and keeping rolling I get a repetitive clunking in the rear. Replaced the A-frame ball joint today and it fixed it a fair bit, but it still remains. Uni joints look fine. I'm yet to look at the maxi-axles, and am confident the Detroit locker shouldn't be the problem, given it's only been in 3 years with very little off-road work.
Where should I be looking?

SubscriberChange your uj's and that should sort it out, I had the same changed mine before a trip to the simpson last year and all was good! My rear uj's had a big notch in it even though when I inspected it it felt solid.
Have you checked that the hand brake shoes aren't dragging? You could slacken off the adjuster, and if it goes away, then you might need to clean & centralize the shoes.

If the handbrake drum is just slightly out of round, and if the handbrake adjuster is adjusted a little too tight, then as you coast to a halt you will get a regular clunk clunk clunk as it rolls to a stop. the noise will be quite a bit faster than the wheel rotation. This is especially loud if the pinion flange is slightly loose or you have a lot of play in the axle drive flanges. Dealer fix is to slacken the handbrake off. I'd prefer they machined the hand brake drum - or maybe I'd put in a disk hand brake instead.
I've also had a large number of diff fails too, and that also sometimes resulted in regular clunking - but more timed with the wheel rotation. ie it was much slower and occured at reasonable speed too. The handbrake issue was only in the last few kmh as you come to a stop.
My money is on the parking brake adjustment or dirt inside the parking brake drum.........some times a leaking oil seal can place oil on the shoes and make them grab on and off slightly.
All fixed - 180 degree turn on the hand brake adjuster bolt did the trick. Thanks for all the suggestions everyone
