    Extended warranty

    What's everyone's thoughts on getting an extended warranty on a new defender??


    Just in general Googling it appears most advice is that extended warranties for vehicles are not worth it. e.g. half of the extended warranties are never needed and those that are utilised the repair amounts were less than what the extended warranty cost.


    The only thing I found specific to Land Rover is the following link, I'm take it with a grain of salt as the blog appears to be associated with sellers of extended warranties

    having been a service adviser in a past life I have dealt with some of the major insurance companies for many hundreds of claims. It is my considered opinion that on the whole they are a waste of money. Examples are, will pay parts to a capped amount. Won't pay labour. Won't cover switches, electric motors, solinoids. Will only cover gearboxes to $500. (It can cost a grand just to look inside)
    I can't remember the amount of times I've had to ring a customer and tell them their $1500 warranty won't cover them as they missed a dealer service. They are a money making scam. Also, don't fall for the paint and rust protection packages. Total and utter waste of money. If you really think you need it get it done privately. Search ABCs 'The Checkout' as they did a segment on dealer extras and extended warranties. Very interesting and confirms my thoughts.
    Just as a side note. When we bought our Holden Cruise the salesman said as we signed the paperwork I'll just take you round to blah blah. So off we go. Sat down and then the hard sell for paint and extras began. I just said why am I here? I want to buy a car and that's all. Nothing else. They got quite snarky! It really cheesed me off.

    However, some of the extended 'factory' warranties can be ok. But as with any insurance only you can decide if it's worth it against how much trouble the car is likely to be.

    Thanks for the feedback Landy.
    I've had my jeep wrangler 11 years and keep tabs on what I spend. Costs above regular services for the 3 years after the original warranty expired was far less than the cost of an extended warranty. Not having owned a defender before I wasn't sure if there were common failures that occur during the extended warranty period that would justify it's purchase. More than likely I'm not going to get an extended warranty but thought others opinions and experiences would be worth hearing anyway.

    Extended warranty on virtually anything is a waste of money - if it would be covered by this it would usually be covered by consumer law anyway.

    And remember that the dealer has a lot higher margin on the extended warranty than on the car, and all they have to do is sell it to you (same applies to the paint and upholstery protection, window tinting etc), where the car they have to do dealer preparation, and wear the cost of storage (and probably capital) until they sell it.

    I've never owned a Jeep but I think the Jeep/Landy thing is the same as the Toyota/Nissan thing. My point being if you've owned a Jeep you will have a fair idea what to expect with your Landy. Someone, somewhere is going to tell you it's rubbish and you bought a rolling money pit. The fact is you didn't but there are common problems across the models. The good news is they are well documented in this and other forums for Land Rovers.
    The best advice I think I could give you is service as per the handbook while in warranty and find yourself a specialist Land Rover workshop when it's out. And don't buy your spares from the first quoted place. The internet is your friend! Don't be scared to order from the UK if the homegrown suppliers 'seem' a bit steep.
    But enjoy your new car. It's iconic and people will stop you just to chat about it or tell you about the one they used to have. It's a club in itself almost.

    Not a Landy, but we decided to buy a three year factory (not dealer) warranty to extend the three year standard warranty on our new Mazda 2. Also fixed price servicing.
    Maybe there are exceptions and limits to what it covers, but we figured we'd just build it into the finance and at least it would put us on the front foot if there was a problem as it put the onus on them so they would have to prove it was not covered rather than us having to prove it should be covered. Also means the warranty covers the full 5 years of the financing.

    Im sure I've read in the fine print that Land Rover extended warranty isn't available on Defenders. That was the case last year at least.

    Well when I was finalizing my contract for my defender due in July they tried to sell me extended warranty. I didn't want to make a snap decision so asked if I could think it over. They said that was fine as long as I paid for it before picking up the vehicle when it arrived. I'm glad I did put it off as I don't think I'm going to bother getting it. But it they do offer it on defenders

    My thoughts on this are pretty simple, it's insurance. You pay $3,500 for an extra 2 years of warranty. Yep you may lose money when you add it up or you may 'make ' money. But at least you know the most you'll lose in that 2 year period.


    My Defender had turbo hose split, transfer case cease, hand brake all within 3 months after my warranty expired.

    The cost of those repairs wasn't quite $3,500 but it's Insirance for the bigger problems that can cause grief.


    As it turned out land rover ended up repaying me for all those issues after I wrote a letter asking for consideration. Consequently I placed an order for another 110, because they have been an unreal company to deal with.


    I don't know for sure what limits the extended warranty offers, but as far as I know it's identical to original warranty, but I'd get it.


    Finally, I was also told I needed to buy EW at time of purchase (in Brisbane) but have since been told by the dealer in Mackay that isn't true. You can extend your warranty anytime nor fire the warranty runs out.

    I see the arguments against getting it, and maybe you only get 60% of that payment back- I know when I purchased the curent vehicle in 2011 the EW COST $2k and now it's nearly double. For me tgat tells me they were losing money on average.

    Interesting. I purchased my 110 from Austral Landrover here in Brisbane. Whilst still under warranty I attempted to extend and was told that extended warranties were no longer available for Defenders. All other LR no problem.

    After a chat with the service chap about the sheer dollars I had parted with to the dealership (3 110's and a Disco) he said he would see what he could do. The answer from "upstairs" was still no. That was that.
