    Puma clutch replacement

Well, it looks like my Puma's clutch has finally had enough - just started to slip under heavy load on the way home from work today. Can't complain too much - it's the original from new and has done plenty of hard yakka without complaint.

I'll be ordering a LR048731 clutch kit and a LR052128 clutch cylinder tomorrow, I also plan to inspect/grease/replace the gearbox adaptor shaft while I'm under there.

With a trip to Fraser looming I better get it sorted quick - any tips from those who have already done this job themselves?

I'll be doing it the hard way (i.e. in the drive way) so any tips to make life easier will be gratefully appreciated!

Just the obvious stuff. Go to bother of removing engine pipe, chassis cross member, transfer case and other bits in first place to give you plenty of room.

The ECU need to come off the bulk head to access a couple of bolts up the top of the bell housing. Be care fully with the loom clips.

Other than that, eat your wheat box its a big heavy box......

Cheers mate, is there anything tricky to bleeding the clutch system - I've never done a system like this one before.

Also, did you do your spigot bearing at the same time?

I automatically change the spigot and throw out bearing every time the gearbox comes off any engine I own. For the time and cost, it can prevent some annoying noises. No idea if Defenders are the same.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing.

Any complexity to changing it in a Puma - special tools, etc?

Unfortunately I can't help you there, as I haven't had the pleasure ( or displeasure ) of doing this yet.

Roughly 125k - seems to be about on the money given the use the truck has had and the fact that it never had any warranty replacement clutches.

I'll be fitting the latest version clutch as a replacement so we'll see how that goes.

The clutch itself is cheap as chips (under $500 all up) but there's a bit of labour in it.

Is there an after market HD clutch kit out there for the puma? i am sure i read somewhere the other day of an after market kit that eliminates all the issues with the land rover kit, mine has had 4 clutches, and has the most recent version i think and it still has lots of clutch noise and rattles... when they changed mine under warranty apparently they sent several clutch plates back as they all had very loose springs.

Not sure about the HD option - looks like I'll be fitting an AP Racing clutch kit.
