You know you've bought your first Defender when your mates from the last 15yrs of toymitsunissan driving remind you of it on every trip away...

You know you are the only one of your mates driving a Defender when the first few toymitsunissan vehicles across a tough obstacle radio the rest of them behind you "Quick! Come watch! It's the Landy's turn!"

You know you are a defender driver when all the radio chatter indicated the jacked-up monster toymitsunissan drivers had a hard time time clearing the obstacle you just idled over in your stock standard vehicle.

(Sorry about the posting trifecta - but it tells a story)

You know you're a Defender owner when you come back from holidays and instead of cleaning up you get the tools out and starting fixing your Defender.

This actually happened to me, except I was following and they kept saying not to follow them because I would get stuck, but I didn't!

Haha.. (It actually did happen to me BTW) My mates bluffed me saying the trail wasn't difficult, a bunch of stock tritons all went through just a week or two before our trip they said. Family friendly they said. Total set up!!

At that time my 2013 DCPU was not quite through its first year of warranty, still as stock as stock standard is - and that trip was only about the 3rd ever excursion off road for my barge.

That trip saw all 4 of my folding side steps demolished on large rock obstacles and a few weeks later I did a job on the stock towbar arrangement so it'd not be so good at getting hung up on rocks.

The obstacle referred to in the above posts was just a matter of picking line through huge washouts (car swallowing) to avoid cross axle situations. The other blokes must have just gone head on valve bouncing and hoping to get through. (Could hear the engine roar but couldn't see round the track.)

I've had that too. Went out wheeling after a bit of rain. Had a lifted patrol and cruiser on what was probably 35s on patrol and 37s on cruiser. they couldnt get through one section even though they gave it a bootfull and I just drove throguh in first low. lol heard them talking about us on the radio.

and when we saw them again they promptly asked me 'what mods have you done to the defender???'

I answered honestly and said the only mods I've got on it were second hand side steps. LOL

Yeah, they were roaring their engines and spinning wheels while I was just idling along, not breaking anything. Excellent low 1st and 2nd in the Deefer.

You know you're a Defender driver when you would rather drive the 50kms to work than catch the train...which by the way is free for me.
