    Nostalgia

...remember when you could buy two new Defenders, a 90 and a 110, for the price of a Discovery 4? (June 2015). Those were the days 😊

RIP Land Rover's Defender, the Greatest Car Ever

"...People like me, however, who don't want a car that drives itself, shouts at me electronically, hits me in the nose with an airbag, requires professionals for the smallest repairs and pretends it's the main concert hall of the Berlin Philharmonic, are losing one of the last opportunities to own a real, no-nonsense, truly safe and enjoyable vehicle...And good luck buying a used model. Owners hate to sell them, and they hardly depreciate -- they weren't made to throw away, after all, like most merchandise these days. Leonid Bershidsky, Bloomberg View, 1 July 2015.

"...Best of all is its design. Every panel looks like it was pressed from a 67-year-old die and the doors need a firm hand to shut. But its boxy, upright proportions are just perfect. The Defender looks like an adventure waiting to happen. It makes every modern off-roader seem generic and dull [...] When the replacement arrives in a few years it's hard to see how this appeal can be retained. The Defender is a classic you can still buy today for a few more months, at least." Philip King, Weekend Australian, 6 June 2015

Classic. Wouldn't be quite the same with a Disco Sport...

Oh good, a whole thread for MrLandy to lament the death of the automobile

It's sad to see the end of an icon, but at the same time it's great that it's lasted as long as it has and so many of us have had the opportunity to buy one.

I'm still optimistic that the replacement will be a fitting tribute to the original. It'll never truly replace the old bus, but maybe we'll be able to love it for a different set of reasons.

It'll more than likely be coming from JLR's shiny new plant in Slovakia, which should keep a lid on costs.
