Puma Gearbox oil, what to use?

Went and costed the Genuine Castrol Syntrans Multi vehicle 75w 90, for the gearbox on my Puma, which seems only available from the Landrover Dealer. They wanted to charge me $69.90 /L . Castrol apparently don't import this oil into Australia. Or so I was told today.

Are people using anything else in their Puma gearbox? Or are most sticking the Landrovers recommendations?

You can use the Castrol Syntrans 75w-90 in the MT82 getrag gearbox. It's what I originally used, when I couldn't get hold of the Land Rover Spec oil.

Last service I did at 80000k's, I used the recommended oil, Castrol BOT 328. It cost $63.24 per Ltr from Rovacraft.

I have also previously used the Motul Gear 300 75w90.

If I had to chose out of the three oils I've used, then the BOT 328 would be my top pick, then the Motul Gear and lastly the Syntrans/Syntrax. It's pricey, but the smoothness of shift especially whilst the box is cold makes it worthwhile.

Agree that Syntrax works ok but isn't an ideal pick, not too bad when hot but noticeably slower shifting when cold - I'm going back to BOT328 when I do the next change. Never tried the Motul.

I've only used the genuine stuff from a dealer, the price is a shock but it's not much more than a tank of fuel and very infrequent- don't recall whether it's 40k or 80k intervals but either way it's a drop in the bucket of running costs.

MT82 is also used in the Ford Ranger - might be worth checking with the Ford dealers to see how their prices compare?

Penrite can supply all the lubricating oils and fluids for a 2.2
Easily obtained from super Cheap and Repco

    Penrite Australia - NetLube

Penrite can't supply BOT382, which was specifically made for the MT82. They do make plenty of other good stuff though, and I pretty much run Penrite for everything else in my Puma.

I think Land Rover say "sealed for life". The service schedule for the 2.4 says gearbox oil is changed at 200,000k . No oil is that good! (Transfer case is 80,000k)

I agree, and it isn't so much the oil that's toast, it's the level of contaminants in the oil !

40,000km is the absolute upper limit IMO, anything more is pushing the friendship.

Yeah I have changed mine at 40k intervals. I read somewhere that in modern gearbox design, the gearbox and the lubricant are designed for one another in collaboration. If that is the case, surely it is false economy to mess with it. About $150 for oil every 40,000km, I spend that on fuel about every 10 days. Hate to think what a gearbox overhaul would cost on these things.
