I haven't had first hand experience in this ,but I understand it's a safety feature in the event of overheating.I'm sure other members will fill you in better,but it's nothing to worry about.
Coming home from Louth Races yesterday I was coming up a fairly steep hill near Sofala. With the Trayon Camper and the usual load on board the 2009 2.4 Puma 130. I was back in third gear and just plodding along. At the top of the hill I went through the gears up to fifth and then down the other side in fourth and third.
As I attempted to go back up the next small hill the vehicle lost power and glancing down at the dash I noticed the temperature gauge had gone up to 3/4. It runs bang on the 1/2 at all times. There was no response from the throttle as if it had stalled bu the motor was still running.
I immediately backed off thinking I had done a fan belt or a hose, and pulled over. The gauge went straight back to 1/2. I got out and checked under the bonnet, no broken belt or hose and no loss of coolant. The level was as normal. I did not shut down the engine and upon getting started again there was no other problem and the old girl drove the next 4 hours to the farm and then home up and over the Blue Mountains.
Any advice or possible cause would be appreciated.

Temp safety cut out actives limp mode - normally a big long pull up a hill in a high gear with a load on board is when this happens.
Temp gauge is normalised and therefore may not move before this occurs.
Has happened to plenty of others before - heaps of info if you search for it.
Nothing to stress about, but would pay to double check your coolant in any event.
FYI, the heater control valve and coolant reservoir cap are common coolant loss points in the Puma.

You may also want to check your rad for a build up of dried mud and make sure your viscous fan is working.
Chenz, do yourself a favour and get a gauge that will display the real coolant temp unlike the crappy temp gauge on the dash, something like a scangauge, i have one and use it all the time to watch the temps when im towing up hill heavily loaded.
Another option for you might be an upgraded radiator, i have a PWR all alloy one supplied by bruce davis and its given consistently cooler temps when towing but ive still put the temp over 100 a few times with it(cut out is at 114)

I have an '08 Puma 110 and experienced the same problem. NplusOne has nailed it already, and it's definitely worth getting a Scangauge or similar to let you know what the actual water temperature is. Easiest install ever and not that expensive for a LOT of peace of mind.
The dial on your dash will stay at horizontal until the temp gets to 108 or thereabouts...and when it does this, the dial goes north and the engine goes into limp mode to let it all cool it down and think about what it's done.
Thanks to a few overzealous passes through deep, gooey Watagan puddles, my radiator was permanently bunged up with clay and ineffective so this happened a lot to me off road as well as up certain stretches of bitumen...long climbs and so on.
I found that the temperature only took a couple of seconds to cool back down to non-limp mode figures - I rarely had to pull over - I would just throw on the hazards until I was able to accelerate again....albeit gently.
Eventually I got a replacement radiator...not an upgrade....and this one has been fine. I'm more cautious with puddles when my mates have been through before me now...and use a wading net from time to time!

Wow its like you were sitting in my 2009 Puma!! A couple of weeks ago mine has done this exactly word for word. I had presumed that it has been an electrical fault so I have just persevered and most days its ok but then other days it does this 10 times. I borrowed a Hawkeye Pro today and watched the live data as the problem occurred and funnily enough when the temp hit 114 C. it went straight into limp mode.
Looks like its a trip to the radiator specialist for a clean out.
