Best to do both at the same time and flush the line with fresh fluid

Changing the master cylinder on my 1998 300tdi 130 is a pain as the aircon line is in the way and I need to disconnect it, therefore I am up for an aircon regas as well.

probably best to do both and the flexi hose to the slave.

I've only just replaced my slave and hose a few weeks ago.
Was still original, as I've owned the beast since 96.

Replaced the master 4 times though.

you probably dont, if you have the setup I think you have you need a fine toothed 0 offset ratcheting ring spanner and a 1/4 inch wobble drive extension with approprraite socket and ratchet or strongarm.

to get the clearance for the cylinder you will need to unbolt the tower.

depending on the routing of the pipe you may need to unbolt the tower first.

An even better option for the master cylinder is to get it lined with a stainless steel sleeve. The thing will last for the life of the vehicle. See your local brake specialist. It's a fairly standard "upgrade".

As Jboot has found out, the master cylinders in Defenders are pretty ordinary and don't last very long...they're basically the same as you'd find on the over-ride braking system on a trailer.

Not sure if you can get the slave cylinders SS lined as well. May be worth asking.

Any of the hydraulic cylinders can be stainless steel lined, but defintely a bigger advantage in the m/c as it is a lot harder to change.

My 110 has had the master cylinder changed three times and the slave cylinder four times in 29 years, so their life is not all that short. The hose is the original.

Every one I've replaced was set up wrong, seems to be a common thing and a common reason for failure. Pat

For the small extra price, change the hose as well. This led to a very disappointing trip to the Cape with clutch problems.

As they wear the baloon out slightly but just enough to reduce the throw of the slave to disengage the clutch. We replaced the slave and the master but the problem still remained until we changed the hose back in Sydney.

    CHANGE THE HOSE!!!!!!!!
