When you say exxy ?...... what sort of $ are we talking about?
Oh and does it retain water? I'd hope not.
The floor matting was well past its use by date and was starting to get holes in it. Particularly on the front corners of the seat box. So while it was stripped out to do the clutch I decided to replace the matting. After some research I decided to replace it with an Exmoor Trim Acoustic Matting kit. I thought I'd let you know my thoughts so far.
The kit comes in a big box. It's heavy. I did try and order direct from Exmoor Trim. They where very good and put me on to British Motor Imports to save horrendous shipping costs from the UK. BMI had one to me inside a week. Great service and I will deal with them again because of this.
So as said the kit is heavy and as such getting it in is a pain and best done with an assistant. This is particularly necessary as when you cut the matting to make the seat box flaps you could bend the matting and crack it! That would be an expensive mistake.
You have to cut out the holes for the seat base mounting bolts and this is very easy with a hole saw. But measure up everything. It is obvious where the holes should be, but Defenders aren't all made the same.
It all went in very easily and fits well. And looks really neat and tidy.
I didn't measure the sound level with the old matting but the interior is noticeably quieter on the motorway at 80-100kph.
Pros: fits well, much quieter looks good.
Cons: price. It's a bit exxy.

It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

I've only had it fitted this weekend so can't say about holding water in a real world test, but I don't think it would. The seat box cover is solid plastic/rubber stuff and the floor section is the same but with a dense closed cell foam stuff.
The price was a little over $900.
This the Wright Off Road kit. I'm not sure what it's made of but its moulded to suit a defender seat base and trans tunnel. It's very durable. Mine would be over 5 years old and no signs of ware. It is hard work and time getting it in but it made a noticeable difference to cabin noise in my Isuzu 110. It's not foam, it's much heavier and doesn't hold water.
I paid about the same for mine.

If it's the same stuff as in the new defenders it should be Mass Loaded Vinyl.
An extract from a web site
"Mass loaded vinyl is one of the highest rated (acoustic) materials on the market today and was developed as a non-toxic replacement for lead sheeting. Mass loaded vinyl consists of a high-grade vinyl material that is impregnated with barium sulphate to give it the same characteristics as lead." -

Technical Information The Acoustic Mat System
Made from cast dense Polyurethane,......
Wrapping the exhaust with header wrap from the turbo to the t/case is extremely effective at reducing heat into the cabin too, and reduces noise to a tiny degree as well.
I've wanted this mat for a long time, but funds always find themselves elsewhere.....
