On my last service, 12 months, build date 07/07/14 (day 1 of MY15), they replaced the lay shaft (G/Box-Tfr Case) while fixing a main seal leak.

So i think we can be confident, that up to the above build date, they were not pre greasing the shaft correctly. Of course no easy way of checking.
By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.

Thanks all for the comments, all great information. I guess as these are built in a non production line, so I'm told, you can get differences in each vehicle. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and see how it shapes up after the trip. I'll be all over them if it's still a bit dodgy.

Driving my Defender today after a few days away, cold start up, cold box, first to second shift clunk. But warming up all good with deliberate slow changes. Normal I think, but I'm also noticing a bit of play in the stick, a loosening or slackening.

Something else unrelated I noticed this morning, the fuel pump at tank seems VERY noisy priming on start up. ...And also that squeaking / creaking under the bonnet after switching off...normal?

Egr valve cleaning cycle - perfectly normal, but annoying...

Possibly your spring loaded gates are working more smoothly. Mine is the same I think. Sometimes too the auto pilot in my head switches iff and I forget how it"s done, which causes me to have to concentrate. I am developing an ever lighter touch on the gear stick, which helps.

i have been thinking for a while now that one problem with looking at this forum every day is I am now driving my one year old Defender like my old MGs and old Sprite I had for my first cars (ie listening to every noise). Probably jinxing myself but so far no problems but I am now almost imagining them!

Ditto but thats good. It would help to have a full factory workshop manual, I reckon.
