Remap, intercooler decat
Hi All
I know most of this has been done to the nth degree BUT I have searched and searched with no luck. So here goes: I've got a 2011 2.4 it's got a BAS remap, Ali sport intercooler and as of the week end a decat pipe.
The difference between each stage, remap first then intercooler and now the decat is remarkable. The decat has made a huge difference in drivability gear selection and speed, the defer is really frightening fast ( for a defer). So now for the questions.
1. Read a forum where steve bell says no to decat, there was no explanation other than turbo over spool?
2. Heat shield in or in the bin?
3. There is a little electrical plug on the block that was obscured by the turbo heat shield that should have its own heat shield, mines missing do I need to put it back?
I really don't want to damage the motor or melt anything so Can anyone that's done the same mods please help out.
Cheers
Mal

I've got a 2.4 it has a terrafirma decat pipe. I know with the terrafirma pipe by removing the existing pipe with the cat converter you also remove a section of the heat shield that once went over the cat, consequently the turbo heat shield is only secured onto the exhaust manifold via a bracket and the base of it tends to rattle away and eventually crack the lagging material.
Mines currently still hanging in there but I want to remove it as it rattles, I don't really see any issue besides the refrigerant line for Ac running close to it, but would also like to know if it will cause any issue from removing it?
I think that the most heat would be coming from the cat and not the Tc.
I'm not really answering your question sorry, more adding to the enquiry,

I really don't think the decat could be anything but a good thing, provided that you leave the rear silencer on and the stock bends in the exhaust pipe as is, so the turbo has some back pressure. I think what bas would be getting at is that a straight through exhaust could cause issues. i think the decat is the first thing anyone should do to tdci or any diesel with one fitted.

Thanks for the reply. The rest of the exhaust is stock, that was my thinking as well. It's the other 2 queries that have me concerns as well

Just my 2c worth, but I'd try and keep the turbo shield. There's lots of stuff crammed in close proximity that you dont want getting too hot. The AC compressor is one of them.
Could the shield somehow be modified with a piece of flat bar and a pipe clamp that goes around the exhaust pipe below the turbo?
Another possibility is wrapping the exhaust. But that does nothing to shield the turbo.
Pete Bell is of the opinion (most likely proven by repeated testing) that a decat doesn't make much difference. But I suspect he's talking about maximum power output rather than low speed responsiveness, which is more important to most of us.
I can't imagine turbo overspeed would be a problem unless you were revving the t!ts off it.
The Allisport is my favourite mod so far. HUGE reduction in intake temps...in the order of 40-45 degrees cooler.

Thanks beery for the reply that's kind of what I was thinking of doing with the heat shield, it's a real knuckle scuffer though. Makes sense what you are saying re Petes opinion but the drivability has gone up exponentially.
Cheers
