    Tray Dilemma

I have a 130 Dual cab on order and there is a slim chance it will be here in time for us to take it on Holidays in the New Year. If It shows up I want to be able to get it registered and mobile as soon as it is possible ( the vehicle was supposed to be here in November - long story...)

The tray manufacturers that I have contacted in the Canberra region all want the vehicle to build the tray on which will add weeks to the delivery time, particularly around Christmas. My options as I see them are as follows:

Buy a second hand alloy tray for less than $1000.00 and make mounts to suit based on the engineering drawings floating around and replace it with a steel tray in the future when I have more time.

Build a steel tray myself and hope I can get it close enough to fit to my satisfaction without having the vehicle to fit it to.

Buy a second hand Defender 130 steel tray - the wrecker in Adelaide has at least one, get it sandblasted and powder coated black and ready to fit. Might be fairly expensive once the transport, sandblasting and powder coating is taken into account.

Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to proceed? The vehicle will be Aintree green with a black roof so an alloy tray would not look particularly attractive hence the replacement steel one in the future.

    Thoughts appreciated,

    Regards,
    Tote

Whichever way you decide, make sure it is mounted correctly as there are not many tray makers around who seem to be aware of how 130, and in particular puma, trays need to be mounted. I would go with the buy second hand option if the time constraint is tight. There is probably still a good chance you will have to modify it to be correct mounting points.

I realise it's not exactly next door to you, but last time I was at Hornsby scrapyard, they had a fair sized tower of stacked trays of a type that might suit you as a temporary solution. I could run a tape or ask questions there for you if you like.

Unless you are going to throw star pickets in the back an ally tray is more than adequate. The flexing available in a planked tray may avoid any issues with rigidity induced chassis cracking as it allows slight movement and flexing.

My tray is a cooma steel tray!

I assume you have this schematic if not, PM me with your email and i'll send you the file. If you were confident in your skills you could make the tray to the schematic and merely tack the mounts to the tray rails just in case you need to make minor changes. Getting it painted and mounted around xmas may be another problem.

I had the same problem 3 years ago when i bought my 130. I bought it early December (second hand) as a cab-chassis and every tray manufacturer i approached laughed at the request for a tray before xmas. I went with a SH tray from another 4wd brand (modified to suit) and 3 years down the track i'm still "gunna" replace it with the tray i wanted in the first place. Beware of the magnitude of the human capacity to settle for a compromised arrangement.

How about "borrow" a second hand tray, and make up a jig of sorts, so that you can get the mounting correct for your preferred tray?

Some closure on this one... I bought a tray from Toowoomba, I just had to drive 1100 KM collect it. Cost $450.00 for the tray, it has a stainless water tank fitted and the toolbox between the chassis rails. It's even the right colour The only downside is that it's pretty short but I'll see how it goes.

I had a '92 110 with an 8' steel tray on it & it was so rigid it broke the "towers" off the chassis where the tray mounted at the front. I lowered the 'towers', redrilled them to remount them to the chassis & fitted rubber engine mounts for flex. Worked so good that on my newer 130 Puma when I raised the tray to allow the spare wheels to fit I did the same thing. I had another 130 TDI with a steel tray mounted so solidly in about a dozen places the tray/chassis would hum, yep, sing to me for a couple of seconds after I had stopped the car & switched off. I used engine mount from a series Landy, don't know which one, poss. all the same.

This tray was off a 130 but I will need to look at the mounts, firstly because it was welded to the chassis and secondly the chassis on the old vehicle was strengthened because the front mounts broke. I'm thinking solid mounting at the back and flexible at the front and middle. A bit of work to do but nothing insurmountable.
