Thread: Sound Deadening and heat reduction in Defender

hey fatcat hows things in brisvegas? I used stinger , same as dynamat a bit cheaper, I have it on the inside of the roof as a deadener to stop the drumming from wind, works a treat, if you use it for heat reduction best on the tunnel external as you want to reflect the heat, got mine at autobarne but you can get larger rolls at a car audio place, just remember the surface must be thoroughly clean and make sure you use a roller or similer to pressure it on evenly if used inside it will act as a noise reduction more then heat reduction cheers

Yeah brisvegas going well, got heaps of waves on the weekend.

Dynamat will reduce noise alone, not heat. You will need something else for that.

While not being tight per se, I like to do things as cost effectively as possible, and try things most may not have thought about. I went out and bought some earthwool, the roof insulation. And then I just cut out an insert that would sit over my transmission tunnel, because of the thickness it baffles the sound, and is obviously a great thermal insulator.

I then proceeded to fill the cavity between headliner and the roof with it, as I sleep in the car.

Works and absolute treat, and incredibly cost effective.

Just had a look on their website... which product did you use mate? The foil backed one seems the logical choice??

I think I used 75mm earthwool from bunnings. It has an r factor of 2.5 or whatever the measurement is.

It's about $80 for a massive roll, which you will only use half of, even if you use it to fill your roof cavity.

I got too lazy to put it on the doors, but it would work there also.

The other thing I noticed is the air con also works better, partly because of the roof lining, but I suspect mostly because of the reduced heat from the transmission tunnel.

Hi fatcat, I'm watching this thread with interest, because It's on my list of things to do. One thing I recommend is the exhaust pipe lagging with he fiberglass tape etc. My passengers always complained about hot feet on the TDi. I finally got around to doing the exhaust pipe last year, quite a noticeable drop in hear coming through the passenger floor.

I like the roof insulation idea as well you can cover a big area fast and cheaply that has to make a difference for the AC. ( My headliner is falling down anyhow, so while its off I can insulate the roof. I'd like to do the tunnel as well, but might have to wait until the transfer case comes out. cheers simmo.

I used this stuff in my 1998 130 TDI. Knocked about 10 decibels off the noise and reduced heat transfer through the tunnel and seat box.
